    Grave Surprise Charlaine Harris

In this second installment of Harris' Harper Connelly, Harper is asked by a professor of paranormal studies at a college/univerisity to demonstrate her abilities to one of his classes.

Things are not quite either he or Harper expects. The professor may be a professor of Paranormal Studies, but he is a disbeliever and has an agenda to debunk Harper's talent. But, his plans go awry when Harper is not only accurate in her findings in the ancient graveyard, but she find an extra body in one of the graves. He thinks she is a fraud, even though she has been completely accurate about all the bodies and their causes of death.

The police come and the do discover that their is actually an extra body in the grave in question, and it happens to be the body of one of the first people Harper was hired to find. This was early on after she survived her lightening strike and was first discovering her talents. and people did not understand how her abilities worked.

Because, she did not find the body in the original investigation and the body turns up in another investigation, years later and hundreds of miles away from where the child was abducted, Harper and her brother become suspects. Then as things usually go for Harper and Tolliver, things become more and more strange. The professor that hired them is murdered before they were paid, and now they have to clear their names of his murder as well. That and provide closure to both families.

As with all of Harris' work it is a quick light read, and very entertaining. It is a well thought out mystery, that will keep you guessing to try to figure it out. If you are looking for something challenging this may not be the book for you, but it you are looking for light entertainment you will love this one.

Charlaine Harris is a great author she always makes her characters seem so real. Grave Surprise is a fast read with dry humor, this series is very intriguing.

    The mystery itself was good

Introduced in 'Grave Sight,' Harper Connelly is a woman who, when young, was hit by lightning, and ended up with the ability to find dead bodies, and 'feel' the cause of death from them. Called in by a very doubting professor, she displays her talent in an old cemetery whose records were sealed, and stuns all by being correct - until she finds a second body in a grave that really doesn't belong.

The body belongs to a girl Harper was hired to try and find - and failed to find - years earlier, and the coincidence seems too much to everyone involved - especially the police. But when the professor turns up dead shortly thereafter, it becomes obvious that something even more vicious is in play - and may be making a play for Harper before long.

Harris chose to take Harper and Tolliver (her step-brother) somewhere I wasn't all that happy to follow, but the mystery itself was a worthwhile one, and I liked the tangled snarl of clues and lies to untangle. I'm not sure it was worth a hardcover priced read, however, and will wait for paperback for the next in the series.
