Of the many hundreds of books written about D-Day and the Normandy campaign, this one stands out as a must-read for every Canadian. No armchair general's critical review, with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, is this. Instead, this account is written by one who lived through the daily horror and grind of the foot soldier, and paints a vivid picture for all of us who have had the good fortune not to face the awful challenge of battle. Having read the book several times since its purchase, I still find myself returning to it to read chapters over again. Each time I do so, I have renewed respect for every Canadian who stood in harm's way those many years ago, and particularly for Mr. Blackburn. He has done all Canadians, young and old, a great service in putting in writing this account of the actions of so many of our citizens to whom we owe a perpetual debt of gratitude. Buy this book, read it, then give it as a gift to a teenager you know, and encourage them to read it as well. They will not fail to be moved.
