Hannibal Rising

by Thomas Harris
Read by: Thomas Harris

Random House Audio Publishing Group | December 5, 2006 | Audio Book (CD)

HE IS ONE OF THE MOST HAUNTING CHARACTERS
IN ALL OF LITERATURE.

AT LAST THE EVOLUTION OF HIS EVIL
IS REVEALED.

Hannibal Lecter emerges from the nightmare of the Eastern Front, a boy in the snow, mute, with a chain around his neck.

He seems utterly alone, but he has brought his demons with him.

Hannibal's uncle, a noted painter, finds him in a Soviet orphanage and brings him to France, where Hannibal will live with his uncle and his uncle's beautiful and exotic wife, Lady Murasaki.

Lady Murasaki helps Hannibal to heal. With her help he flourishes, becoming the youngest person ever admitted to medical school in France.

But Hannibal's demons visit him and torment him. When he is old enough, he visits them in turn.

He discovers he has gifts beyond the academic, and in that epiphany, Hannibal Lecter becomes death's prodigy.

    Mildly enjoyable

Of all of Harris's tales of Hannibal I liked this one the least of all. It was written after Hannibal, Lambs and Red Dragon. It just struck me that Harris is trying to continue to cash in the Hannibal sage, and to his benefit people just keep going for it. Enough already.

This is a very sad example of the book industry trying to capitolize on a name rather then a quality product. Thomas Harris has written some EXCELLENT novels, chiefly Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs. Both those books are brilliant, thrilling page turners. THIS book, however, was an unnecessary and poorly developed idea. It's really, really terrible. I wouldn't lie to you. It's just not worth your time. There's a reason this book only took like 10 minutes to go from hardcover to paperback...it's sooooo BAD. Stay far away from this novel.

This book was entertaining. Some parts were far fetched but that was to be expected given the outline and expectations of the character.
