From the Publisher

Will Ferguson's bestselling debut novel-formerly known as Generica-is now an international publishing sensation, attracting kudos from critics and readers in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K. Ferguson is well known for his non-fiction hits such as How To Be Canadian, but here he turns his hand to fiction-with hilarious results.

Edwin de Valu, an overworked editor at Panderic Press, is in trouble. The weekly editorial meeting isn't going well and he needs a hit for the upcoming fall season. In desperation he presents a previously rejected self-help manuscript, "What I Learned On The Mountain," by Tupak Soiree.

Much to Edwin's chagrin, the project is accepted, and soon becomes the number-one bestseller of all time. But can this self-help book be the real thing? Dismayed by the plague of happiness that ensues, Edwin attempts to get to the bottom of the mysteries of Tupak Soiree and the book he has unleashed on our unsuspecting world.

About the Author

Will Ferguson is the author and co-author of nine books including How to be a Canadian, which sold 25,000 copies in Canada, won the 2002 Libris Booksellers Award for Non-Fiction Book of the Year and was shortlisted for the 2002 Leacock Medal for Humour, along with Happiness. He is the first author in history to have two books shortlisted for the Leacock Medal of Humour in the same year. Happiness went on to win, and was later serialized on CBC radio and shortlisted for the Commonwealth Award: Canada & Caribbean. Will lives in Calgary with his wife and two sons.

From the Critics

""This is a little gem of a book about a very large idea. It entertains, stirs the soul and provokes some serious reflection.""
-Pamela Wallin, The Globe and Mail

""Hilarious. Ferguson takes no prisoners: [Happiness] is a caustic and outrageously funny send-up of society's foibles.""
-W.P.Kinsella, author of The Thrill of the Grass

A Tongue In Cheek Joy 4

This review is from: Happiness (Trade Paperback)

I adored this book on a range of levels. It begins with a sarcastic take on the book publishing industry. Soon, however, it delves into a take on Self-Help with a singularly interesting premise: what if there was a self-help title that worked completely? If everyone quit smoking, found happiness, fulfilled joyful lives, and a great sex life to boot. Simply, the western world falls apart. This is wit, not humour, and social commentary abounds with acidic sarcasm. It was a riot to… read more

    Ambitious and Exciting 4

This was a lot of fun. Ferguson has a way with words that let's him be poignant and rude at the same time. The storyline is brilliant and imaginative. Parts of the dialogue, however, seem a little forced and unnatural. None the less, this was funny and insightful. read more

    Bestest Book Ever! 5

I picked up this book about two years ago, largely because the cover caught my eye. The first 50 pages or so were kind of ho hum, but then at a certain point I was completely transfixed. At many points I actually found myself laughing out loud, tears forming in my eyes because of the overwhelming joy of it all. Even to this day when I'm feeling blue, I think of it and smile...

    Ferguson at his best!!! 5

If you were rolling on the floor laughing after reading How to Be a Canadian , then you absolutely have to rush out and purchase Happiness . I found myself in places laughing out loud, sometimes at the simple absurdity of situations that the main character, Edwin De Valu, found himself in. This book is a definite must read for anyone who loves Will Ferguson, or who just scoff at the useless self-help books out there.

From Horrible to Excellence in 300 pages 5

I picked this book up by chance at the airport bookstore at the start of a Caribbean vacation in 2002. When I started it, after about 50 pages I almost put it down thinking it was one of the dumbest things I had ever read. Being that I didn't have many other entertainment options on this particular trip, I kept reading. When I finished I was a changed man. It is an awe inspiring read that touches you in ways you do not see coming. Here we are 3 years later and I still talk about the book to… read more
