The Happy Baker: A Dater's Guide To Emotional Baking

by Erin Bolger
Photographed by: Jason Hervey
Contribution by: Sandy Peic

Happy Baker Publishing | April 24, 2009 | Trade Paperback

"My Name Is Earl" meets "Sex and the City" meets "Grandma's Cookie Jar." Yep, that's The Happy Baker book in a nutshell, possibly with a little Golden Girls thrown in ... think Rose Nyland. The Happy Baker book is a collection of recipes most of which are unique to Erin Bolger aka The Happy Baker's rural upbringing, matched with her own personal dating memories. The memoir vignettes are singularly her own, but are at the same time very relatable. Sometimes, it's nice to know you weren't the only one to make out with a long-haired rocker in the middle of a cornfield, with bangs the size of Oklahoma!

I first heard about this book on Dragon's Den. As a writer and editor who's also learning to cook, I was curious to read a self-published cookbook/memoir. Then my sister just happened to give it to me for my birthday. Erin's bubbly personality certainly comes through in her writing, but it's not really that innovative or inspiring. It reads like someone didn't edit it (one sentence made me want to shred the page) but that kind of adds to the small-town charm of the book.

However, the recipes are the biggest failure of this book. They're not anything special (four separate recipes for chocolate bark? Please.) And while the use of common ingredients is nice, the directions are horrible. Anyone who has melted chocolate knows you have to melt it in a double boiler, not in a saucepan on the stove. Yet every direction that involves melting chocolate says to melt it in a sauce pan.

I attempted two recipes before I gave up on the book entirely: the sea salted caramels, and the shortbread cookies. The directions for the caramels include nothing about temperature (which is vitally important when working with sugar) and makes no mention of ideal texture or how long to cool the caramel. Even though I followed the directions to the letter (including burning my chocolate in a saucepan, which makes the chocoholic in me very sad) the caramels were a major flop. I've checked other caramel recipes, and the ingredients are pretty much the same. It's the instructions that kill it.

When I tried the shortbread cookies, they turned out to be a flop, too. They tasted all right, but my mother, who's made shortbread cookies every Christmas for as long as I can remember, tasted them and announced the flour-to-butter ratio was off, namely that there wasn't enough flour. I also recited the directions to her, and she told me how there isn't enough mixing time given to allow the gluten strands to form properly, which is why my cookies crumbled to dust if you looked at them wrong.

The only thing that really impresses me about the book (aside from Miss Bolger's enthusiasm) is the photography. The images are fantastic, and there are a few I'm considering just cutting out of the book and hanging on my wall. Because otherwise I have no use for this book, as I'd never recommend it to any bakers I know, and I'd feel bad donating it to Goodwill.

This book could have been fantastic. The energy is there, and Miss Bolger certainly beleives in her book (and I'm assuming that she does indeed know how to bake, since the Dragons were impressed by her treats) but it sorely needed an editor with a test kitchen.

maybe YOUR baking skills suck and you're not a good writer and editor yourself? once your book reaches the success of this one, you can comment then. until that time, keep quiet and keep nasty and unnecessary comments to yourself. its not a true "cookbook". as the title says, its a light hearted guide to emotional baking. the recipes are fine, too bad you can't follow directions. do everyone a favour and PLEASE donate the book to goodwill, you don't deserve a copy of it. - JK

Once I got past the obvious spelliing/grammatical errors I really enjoyed this book! Not only is it an entertaining read while your items are in the oven, but the recipes are easy to follow, use common ingredients, and turn out absolutely wonderful! The items had rave reviews at a party I threw!
I also enjoyed that each recipe has a picture and you have an idea of what the item will turn out to be. A great book for people who love to bake with ease and enjoy an entertaining read!

So I got this book as an easter gift from my Mother in Law. At first glance I assumed I would just put on the shelf with all my other cookbooks that I have never ever tried one recipe out of. Then I took a glance at this one, started reading the stories and couldn't put it down. Upon completion I drove into town, grabed a couple of ingredients I didn't have in the cupboard and make my very first dessert from a cook book!
    yummy!

I remember Erin from highschool but have not seen her since. I bought her book without looking at it just to support her but I am so glad that I did! It is a pleasing, funny and light read full of great home baking recipes that is sure to satisfy any tummy or emotion!!
    Congrats Erin.

Great tasting old recipes with zippy new titles. Anyone going through the dating scene or had the pleasure of such for any length of time will get a kick out of Erin Bolger's stories and an even bigger kick from baking and reading at the same time! I bought a few books for Christmas presents for any gal in my family who doesn't have a steady love interest.

I saw a review for this book on Breakfast Television and just knew that I had to have it. I only usually buy books after being able to look at the recipes. However this book is not available in stores in Alberta so I had to purchase the book online. I wish I would have ordered a handful of copies. I read the whole thing in one sitting and the recipes are fairly simple and use every day ingredients most people have on hand. The stories are enlightening and anyone who opens this book will be able to relate to at least one stage of the dating process.

As a frequent visitor to Chapters, I'm always on the look out for books of every genre that peak my interest enough to warrant purchasing them. When I picked up this book, I began to smile warmly & giggle simultaneously whilst my eyes surveyed the mouth-watering recipes intertwined with her personal stories. Although her dating experiences are unique in many ways to her, they are relatable in every aspect to all of us. Her wit and humour only serve as an added bonus to an already fabulous collection of easy recipes that harken me back to the smells of my Grandmother's kitchen on a Sunday afternoon. Well done Ms. Bolger...you accomplished quite a feat, I bought 2 copies (because I know someone special who will love it as much as I do)!

This book has been an incredible bonding experience for me and my pre-teen daughter.

We bought this book with the intention of baking some yummy recipes together. However, as we read the stories I was inspired to share my own dating experiences with my daughter.

We've had some great laughs and warm moments in the kitchen as we create some delicious treats.

This was definitely one of the best books I've ever purchased!

It was a rainy day, I sat down on the sofa with a tea in one hand, my copy of the Happy Baker in the other and tissues table-side, just in case I feel a tear come on. I couldn't believe how relatable her tales of awkward moments growing up, to dating woes in her 20's and 30's were to me. To have a recipe compliment every tale, with a clever title and gorgeous photo, even better! This book is truly about taking your dating frustrations out in the kitchen, whether its 'cracking nuts' with a handy hammer, or crushing corn chips in a bowl with your bare hands! It sounds like the most satisfaction Erin got from these experiences was Baking afterwards...not as someone suggests, "emotional eating" of the end result.
Buy this book! It makes a terrific gift... I picked up 3 to share with my favorite girls/baking buddies :)

What's not to get? I don't know a single (no pun intended) genuine person who cannot relate to relationships, food and feeling good. Very simply, this is a book to savour. From Erin's lighthearted and relatable stories to her simply decadent (and cleverly entitled) recipes, The Happy Baker book is an enjoyably easy read. That every single (60+!) recipe is accompanied by a mouthwatering, beautifully styled full colour photograph, has been urging enough for me to burn some calories through some emotional baking! Erin is sharing a taste of happiness with this sweet book. I, for one, get it, got and love it!

What a delightful read! Funny, relatable stories & great recipes with terrific photos of each one. How unique that Erin's emotional feedback comes from baking for the enjoyment of others. How generous!! Can't wait for your next book Erin - hope you're working on it.

    Don't Get It...

I checked this book out at Chapters and I really don't get it.
Eating your emotions is really not a good idea for the waist line to start. And the book is really not funny. I was hoping for some witty banter about guys and dating and it just wasn't there. The titles of the recipes just left me a little blah...It may be a good book for cooking recipes, but for a witty "chic lit" read, not so much.

Once you purchase this book, you will never want to put it down. The yummy recipes are easy to follow with scrumptious results. Each recipe goes along with a great story about your first love in Kindergarten, all the way to being sexy and single in your 30s. I definitely think this author has a novel in her. If you can't get enough of Sex and the City, you must have this book.

You will DEFINITELY need to buy more than one copy, TRUST ME! I must say this is the best baking book I have ever seen! Anyone who sets their eyes on this book, instantly falls in love. Could it be the mouth watering photos that accompany each recipe? Or the roll on the floor laughing tales of dating? If you need a great gift for someone or yourself, this book is it! Trust me you won't regret it!
