My opinion of Harry Potter may be biased because I adore the series so much. Nonetheless, I think J.K. Rowling does a fabulous job in creating her characters and in the development of her brilliant storyline. The story is easy to picture in your head and to understand, very few times I had to go back and reread sentences or paragraphs. The characters grow up and mature along with you and think in rational ways that someone could easily relate to. The book has a bit of every genre; romance, humour, battle, magic and a notorious villain and can appeal to any age group.

  • I had to read this novel for my Children's Lit class. How cool is that? I don't think I've ever been so excited to do homework. And I would gladly study it again.

All right first I have to admit that when I picked up a spare copy for class (one that I could write all over) I laughed. Here is why: I will admit I haven't read this book in a while. Many, many years have passed since I last picked it up; however, I've read it many a times. Anyhow, when I read it years ago when I was much younger it was always such a great adventure (still is), but also such a huge book. It's huge in the sense that so much happens but I laughed because its 223 pages long. I guess I was more use to the 500 pages of the last four novels.

But who knew that behind an adventure there was so much hidden meanings and allusion. I mean I read this before and just dove right into the story of an orphaned boy in a magical world, which of course is perfectly fine to do as that was Rowling's original intentions. Who knew that there was allusions to genocide, class separation. Who knew that Harry Potter would fit the structure of Romance (Fantasy Romance), Quest, High Fantasy, Fairy Tale, Fantasy, School Story, Orphan story, Gothic story, and Detective story.

Who knew there was so much wrapped up in one loveable adventure? But too me that's what it will always be...one hell of an adventure. For 223 pages, a lot sure does happen.

We are thrown into the world of Wizards, where we are actually referred to as Muggles, while a young boy learns who he is, fits the idea of who other people think he is, and accepts himself for who he is. Harry goes from an orphan with no friends whom weird things happen to, to one that was written in Wizarding history books with some rather great friends and adventurous life.

Harry Potter is a book for all ages filled with pages and pages of mischief, adventure, friendship, self discovery, and the teachings of Good vs. Evil, with Evil always losing.
    Good:
Harry Potter-Humble, good, courageous and curious
Hermione-Waking up in the middle of the night to run to your books and get half way through your notes to realize...you've already taken that exam. Hilarious
Ron-scratch that, The Wesley Brother: (mainly Ron, and Fred and George) the most hilarious characters I think I've ever come across. Wish they were real...I'm in love with the whole family
    Bad:
    Nothing here.
Overall (Writing style, story line, and general):
Overall Rowling manages to put across her meanings and provide a clear picture through few words allowing for an adventure every page that everyone follows and no one questions. She answers every question that needs to be answered in this novel and somehow manages to set up plots for books that will happen far into the future from when this was released, and I can't help but ask how? Her imagination and planning must have been meticulous, and it paid off.

Harry Potter's parents died when he was a baby. He was raised by his aunt and uncle, who hated his parents, hate him, and tell him nothing about his family history. On his 11th birthday, he discovers that he is a wizard and has been invited to attend Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

I really enjoyed my first reread of this first Harry Potter book. I've been interested in rereading the series for a long time, to remind myself of details left out of the movies. There was much more focus on Harry's life with his aunt and uncle, and it was fun starting over, as Harry meets the teachers and students at Hogwarts, and makes friends with Hermione and Ron. I had forgotten what an annoying goody-two-shoes Hermione had been! Once again, I really enjoyed it!

I whatched the movie a few times with my wife and loved it. She told me that I would love the book even more, So I decided to start reading the serise and fell in love with the first book. I love how you are introduced to all the characters, and how you end up getting to know your favorite one's, and one's you don't like, and wish something bad would happen to them. I really enjoyed this book and I can not wait to start reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. I found this book to be a great read.

HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE by J.K. Rowling

The Harry Potter series is genius, and it couldn't have started out any better than it did with this book. The characters are rich, and dynamic, and you can't help but be drawn in by each and every one of them. The magic and mystery of Hogwarts pulls you in instantly, there's is no better world to lose yourself in than this one. I have never known another book to be so versatile than HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE, I have seen men and women, boys and girls, children and adults alike, all reading this novel, and all of them being in awe of the magical journey this novel takes you on. I loved this book even more the second time around. I highly recommend it to those of you who haven't yet had the pleasure of meeting Harry Potter. :)

    Overall Opinion: A+

I read this book in grade 3 for a book report. I found it okay and didn't continue with the rest of the series. At 13, my dad convinced me to re-read the book and I found it absolutely amazing! I read the entire series in one month because it interested me so much. A lot of my friends also enjoy the series very much and my dad too. I wouldn't recommend it for ages 7-9, I would recommend it for all ages.

Great book and great movie ! .. JK Rowling is an amazing author, she created this whole magical world in her mind and was able to express it on paper in a very powerful way using much description and explanations for everything. while reading the book you become trapped in this world, you feel like you know the characters and the world of Hogwarts personally, it is amazing to think that this all came from the power of imagination.

How did Harry Potter become a household word?

I am intrigued by the phenomena of Harry Potter, and this review is a writer / editor's perspective. The plot and characters are well known and described in many reviews, so I will not address them.

I purchased all four books over two years ago, but they sat on my shelf unread. Then, I was away from home without a book, and a friend loaned me her copy of The Sorcerer's Stone. Within two weeks, I read all four books. Why?

    J. K. Rowlings captures the imagination with prose that draws her readers in. Details that are not in the movie, such as Harry's hair that stayed one length no matter how often it was cut, which showed that he was a wizard, but did not know it.

    * He was different from his peer group; isolated in a world of Muggles. Children often feel isolated and mistreated, as do adults, therefore most people can relate to this situation.
    * He is an orphan who believes his parents died in a car crash, and he has no pictures of them. He longs to belong, an emotion that is common in all ages.
    * His room was a closet under the stairs, he never received gifts or a kind word, and was viewed as something to get through by his guardians. In reality, anyone treated like this is abused. Yet Harry kept a positive attitude, and enjoyed the privacy the room gave him. He made the best of bad circumstances.
    * His cousin was a pampered slob, but he was created by his parents overindulgent behavior. He received 36 presents for his birthday, but it was not enough. Things do not replace guardianship.
    * Harry, small for his age, was the object of ridicule. Magic delivered him. Who does not dream of a magical solution to their problems? This is a writer's tool known as "deus ex machina" or "God out of a machine." Commonly, in editing, this is the "hand of God" tool. It is generally used in an unconvincing plot, character, or event, however, Rowlings success is because she foreshadowed the magic as part of Harry's character through the lightning bolt scar on his forehead.

Other aspects of the writing itself are:
    * Rowlings does not talk down to her audience of young adults.
    * The same story elements that appeal to a child, appeal to an adult; and the book is unique and readable.
    * Her characters grow, change, and make decisions based on their own motives.
    * Life is not simple; people do die.
    * Good and evil exist, as they do in reality, in many guises.
    * She takes time to set up the characters, plot, and scenes. I wondered why she dedicated so many pages to Privet Drive. This introduced Harry, and because we know how he is treated, we know why Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry immediately becomes his home. He was wanted.
    * It is easy to read. The text flows naturally, even with strange words and unusual names.
    * Her creativity and descriptions bring life to the story, and you want to know what happens next.

Rowlings did not expect her marvelous story to capture readers from all age groups. She was surprised to be compared to Frank L. Baum who wrote the Wizard of Oz.

Now I, like million of J. K. Rowlings fans from all over the world, anxiously await the next book. Thus, Harry Potter, became a household word.

Harry Potter is the best series of books I ever read. I love Harry Potter so much that I am on my 8th time reading them. I read them all once a year at least. Ginny Weasley/Potter is my idol so much that my email is 'GinnyWeasleylvs2dance@-------.com!!!!!!I am obsessed with Harry Potter and I feel that I can never put those books down. I can read each book in one day so it only takes me a week to read the books, but it seems that one week a year id not enough! I went to the Harry Potter exhibit and the Ontario Science centre and it was amazing! Though I was sorry to see that it was mostly about the movies, not the books.

Harry Potter is a young teenage boy living with his aunt and uncle, in London England. His aunt and uncle don't like him and are very mean to him. Then one day, Harry receives a letter that changes his life forever!
This book has it all-action, suspence, romance! It is incredibly well written and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I really recommend this book to anyone aged 8 and up!!

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J.K. Rowling is a great novel for people of all ages, because the story is creative and the length isn't too long. I just recently reread it after nine years and it was just as exciting as the first time. The narrator is funny, making the most ordinary situations something pleasant to read. The words are carefully selected and they create images in your mind as you read. Even after watching the movie, reading the novel is a different experience. I am very eager to start the second book, since books are not as easily forgotten as movies.

Harry Potter has been living with the Dursley's for as long as he can remember. One day, a little before his eleventh birthday, he checks the mail and sees that a letter is addressed to him. However, Uncle Vernon doesn't allow him to see his letter, or the other hundreds of letters being mailed to him, tracking them wherever they try to hide.

Harry learns that the Dursley's were lying to him about how his parents died, that he is a wizard, and the letters are for his admission to Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Harry and his friends, Ron and Hermione, learn about the Philosopher's Stone and suspect that it may get into the wrong hands. Will Harry Potter get anyone to believe that the Philosopher's Stone is in danger? Learn more of their magical world.

I highly recommend this novel to children to develop their interest in literature.

Yeah...I jumped on the band wagon of Harry Potter. I am not a huge fan but so many people talk about the serious and my sister has all the books so they were readily available to read. It was okay but I felt it was for a younger child. Rowling shows brilliant flashes of imagination which kept me going and now I can discuss details of the book with my niece and nephew who are huge fans of Potter.
