Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone Children's Paperback Edition

by J.K. Rowling

Raincoast Books | August 31, 2000 | Trade Paperback

When a letter arrives for unhappy but ordinary Harry Potter, a decade-old secret is revealed to him. His parents were wizards, killed by a Dark Lord''s curse when Harry was just a baby, and which he somehow survived. Escaping from his unbearable Muggle guardians to Hogwarts, a wizarding school brimming with ghosts and enchantments, Harry stumbles into a sinister adventure when he finds a three-headed dog guarding a room on the third floor. Then he hears of a missing stone with astonishing powers which could be valuable, dangerous, or both. "The saga of Harry Potter and his creator has almost reached the status of myth ... The books strike as deeply as the most timeless fairy tales. Harry and his friends seem intensely real-parents report a frequent refrain of ''they''re just like us.''" -Maclean''s "A richly imagined world to which young readers will surrender themselves, and one of the most attractive heroes to come around in a long while." -Globe and Mail "Harry Potter is the biggest phenomenon in kids'' publishing for decades ... Rowling has taken a classic formula and given it a contemporary (but not too contemporary) twist, where the hero crosses the boundary from the day-to-day mundanity to a world of magic and wonder." -Vancouver Sun

Harry Potter's parents died when he was a baby. He was raised by his aunt and uncle, who hated his parents, hate him, and tell him nothing about his family history. On his 11th birthday, he discovers that he is a wizard and has been invited to attend Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

I really enjoyed my first reread of this first Harry Potter book. I've been interested in rereading the series for a long time, to remind myself of details left out of the movies. There was much more focus on Harry's life with his aunt and uncle, and it was fun starting over, as Harry meets the teachers and students at Hogwarts, and makes friends with Hermione and Ron. I had forgotten what an annoying goody-two-shoes Hermione had been! Once again, I really enjoyed it!

Harry Potter is living a miserable existence with his nasty relatives, the dastardly Dursleys and their son Dudley -- who are quite unaware that he is not a Muggle (a human), and that he is in fact, destined for greatness. One day, owls begin to appear in the sky, peculiar people in cloaks loom in the shadows and before you can say "Alohomora," Harry Potter is whisked away by a scruffy giant named Hagrid to train for his new life as a wizard. You see, Harry Potter survived the attack by the evil wizard Voldemort, who killed Harry's parents. In the wizard world, that makes Harry Potter an exalted figure. Now it is time for Harry Potter to attend the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he discovers that he has very special powers. Will Harry be strong enough to win the game of Quidditch and brave enough to unlock the secret hiding in the trapdoor? Comparisons to Roald Dahl have been made; though Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone may well be a superior read. This is a complex and sophisticated novel, with a truly surprise ending.
