From the Publisher

Harry Potter is living a miserable existence with his nasty relatives, the dastardly Dursleys and their son Dudley -- who are quite unaware that he is not a Muggle (a human), and that he is in fact, destined for greatness. One day, owls begin to appear in the sky, peculiar people in cloaks loom in the shadows and before you can say "Alohomora," Harry Potter is whisked away by a scruffy giant named Hagrid to train for his new life as a wizard. You see, Harry Potter survived the attack by the evil wizard Voldemort, who killed Harry's parents. In the wizard world, that makes Harry Potter an exalted figure. Now it is time for Harry Potter to attend the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he discovers that he has very special powers. Will Harry be strong enough to win the game of Quidditch and brave enough to unlock the secret hiding in the trapdoor? Comparisons to Roald Dahl have been made; though Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone may well be a superior read. This is a complex and sophisticated novel, with a truly surprise ending.

About the Author

J. K. (Joanne Kathleen) Rowling, July 31, 1965 J. K. Rowling was born at Chipping Sodbury General Hospital in Gloucestershire, U. K. on July 31, 1965 to Anne and Peter Rowling. Two years later, her sister Dianne was born. Rowling attended Tutshill Primary and then went on to Wyedean Comprehensive where she was made Head Girl in her final year. Her University years she spent at Exeter University, where she received a degree in French. She later took some teaching classes at Moray House Teacher Training College and a teacher-training course in Manchester, England. This extensive education created a perfect foundation to spark the Harry Potter series that Rowling is renowned for. After college, Rowling moved to London to work for Amnesty International, where she researched human rights abuses in Francophone Africa, and worked as a bilingual secretary. In 1992, Rowling quit office work to move to Portugal and teach English as a Second Language. There she met and married her husband, a Portuguese TV journalist. But the marriage dissolved soon after the birth of their daughter, Jessica. It was after her stint teaching in Portugal that Rowling began to write the premise for Harry Potter. She returned to Britain and settled in Edinburgh to be near her sister Di, and attempted to at least finish her book, before looking for another teaching job. Rowling was in fact working as a French teacher in June of 1997 when she heard the news that her book would soon be published by London agent Christopher Little, in association with Bloomsbury Children's Books. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was published in June of 1997 and was an overnight sensation. It won the British Book Awards Children's Book of the Year and was shortlisted for the Guardian Fiction Award. Her first book also received a "Commended" citation in the Carnegie Medal awards. She also received 8,000 pounds from the Scottish Arts Council, which contributed to the finishing touches on The Chamber of Secrets. Rowling continued on to win the Smarties Book Prize three years in a row, the only author ever to do so. At the Bologna Book Fair, Arthur Levine from Scholastic Books, bought the American rights to Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for the unprecedented amount of $105,000.00. The book was retitled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone for it's American release, and proceeded to top the Best Seller's lists for children's and adult books. The American edition won Best of the Year in the School Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, Parenting Magazine and the Cooperative Children's Book Center. It was also noted as an ALA Notable Children's Book as well as Number One on the Top Ten of ALA's Best Books for Young Adults. Her consecutive books in the series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, have taken first, second and third place on the New York Times Bestseller List for three years in a row. Rowling planned on the series being a culmination of seven books, one for each year of the main character's attendance at the Wizard's School. In a promising development for the new author, Warner Brothers bought the movie rights to the first two books of Harry Potter for a very substantial amount of money and has turned out three very successful installments of movies faithfully based on the books.

All I can say is...wow! I'm 18 and I rarely pick up a book and read it thoroughly from start to finish, but this one is truly an exception to that. I read it in 3 days and just couldn't put it down. Very mysterious and twisting plot......Unbelievable is the word for it. I would recommend this book to anyone who even remotely enjoys reading, even if it is at a grade 4 reading level...who cares! it's fantastic.

The Harry Potter novels are absolutely fantastic. I am 20 and read constantly, so I know a good book when I see one and the Potter books are some of the best I have ever read. The Potter novels rank up there with Dahl, Tolkien, and Banks and continue the British tradition turning out superb nonsense and fantasy writers. I have read the first four books about 10 times and can't wait for the next book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I hope JK Rowling realizes the popularity of the… read more

I've read this already, of course, but when I saw it available on unabridged audiocassette, and having already listened to book five, I couldn't resist. Here's the thing - Jim Dale performing this book gives it a whole new depth. Now, sure, this is the americanized version (why did they bother?), and things like 'bogey' get translated to things like 'booger' (do Americans really have that low an opinion of their childrens' comprehension level?), but Jim Dale's performance makes up for all of it… read more

    The power of imagination 4

Great book and great movie ! .. JK Rowling is an amazing author, she created this whole magical world in her mind and was able to express it on paper in a very powerful way using much description and explanations for everything. while reading the book you become trapped in this world, you feel like you know the characters and the world of Hogwarts personally, it is amazing to think that this all came from the power of imagination.

This book and the others so far of this series is the most inspiring books to those who actually took the opertunity to read it. I don't think you need a recomended age for these books, well even if a recomended age was placed on these books, many will egnore it. The magic produced by the words of the story is very influencing. Thanks Ms. Rowling for writing these great books and I hope you don't end at 7.

I bought Harry Potter, thinking it was a book for young children. The reason I bought it was to see what all the hype was about. Then I actually read the book, and for two days I couldnt put it down. This is just a marvelous book. Its not only a young readers book, its a book for ALL ages, including parents and grandparents. The world included is one with mystical witches and wizards, one that I ALWAYS dreamed of as a kid and it let my imagination roam free in a wonderful way. I give my praise… read more

I grew up reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Bugs Potter, Charlotte's Web, etc. I heard so many people talking about these books and saw many businessmen reading them on my flights. Even though I am now 26, I finally sat down and read the first Harry Potter book. The story is really well written and takes your mind off the pressures of everyday life. I would read it in the morning with my cup of tea and delight in Harry's adventures. This is exactly the type of book my grandmother… read more

How did Harry Potter become a household word? 5

How did Harry Potter become a household word? I am intrigued by the phenomena of Harry Potter, and this review is a writer / editor's perspective. The plot and characters are well known and described in many reviews, so I will not address them. I purchased all four books over two years ago, but they sat on my shelf unread. Then, I was away from home without a book, and a friend loaned me her copy of The Sorcerer's Stone. Within two weeks, I read all four books. Why? J. K. Rowlings… read more

This has to be the best book EVER!! JK Rowlings exquisite writing puts Roald Dahl and Beverly Cleary waaaay behind her. When you read her book her rhythmic writing traps you into the depths of the pages. Not only can you not put it down, but the realistic and serious way that she explains the goings on in the wizarding world makes you feel as though magic is possible. Though of course, with JK, it always is.
