Harry Potter, an ordinary boy who lives in a cupboard under the stairs, discovers his true heritage at Hogwarts School of Wizardry and Witchcraft. "The saga of Harry Potter and his creator has almost reached the status of myth ... The books strike as deeply as the most timeless fairy tales. Harry and his friends seem intensely real-parents report a frequent refrain of ''they''re just like us.''" -Maclean''s "A richly imagined world to which young readers will surrender themselves, and one of the most attractive heroes to come around in a long while." -Globe and Mail "Harry Potter is the biggest phenomenon in kids'' publishing for decades ... Rowling has taken a classic formula and given it a contemporary (but not too contemporary) twist, where the hero crosses the boundary from the day-to-day mundanity to a world of magic and wonder." -Vancouver Sun More than five million Harry Potter books sold in Canada

    Harry Potter

My opinion of Harry Potter may be biased because I adore the series so much. Nonetheless, I think J.K. Rowling does a fabulous job in creating her characters and in the development of her brilliant storyline. The story is easy to picture in your head and to understand, very few times I had to go back and reread sentences or paragraphs. The characters grow up and mature along with you and think in rational ways that someone could easily relate to. The book has a bit of every genre; romance, humour, battle, magic and a notorious villain and can appeal to any age group.

I had to read this novel for my Children's Lit class. How cool is that? I don't think I've ever been so excited to do homework. And I would gladly study it again.

All right first I have to admit that when I picked up a spare copy for class (one that I could write all over) I laughed. Here is why: I will admit I haven't read this book in a while. Many, many years have passed since I last picked it up; however, I've read it many a times. Anyhow, when I read it years ago when I was much younger it was always such a great adventure (still is), but also such a huge book. It's huge in the sense that so much happens but I laughed because its 223 pages long. I guess I was more use to the 500 pages of the last four novels.

But who knew that behind an adventure there was so much hidden meanings and allusion. I mean I read this before and just dove right into the story of an orphaned boy in a magical world, which of course is perfectly fine to do as that was Rowling's original intentions. Who knew that there was allusions to genocide, class separation. Who knew that Harry Potter would fit the structure of Romance (Fantasy Romance), Quest, High Fantasy, Fairy Tale, Fantasy, School Story, Orphan story, Gothic story, and Detective story.

Who knew there was so much wrapped up in one loveable adventure? But too me that's what it will always be...one hell of an adventure. For 223 pages, a lot sure does happen.

We are thrown into the world of Wizards, where we are actually referred to as Muggles, while a young boy learns who he is, fits the idea of who other people think he is, and accepts himself for who he is. Harry goes from an orphan with no friends whom weird things happen to, to one that was written in Wizarding history books with some rather great friends and adventurous life.

Harry Potter is a book for all ages filled with pages and pages of mischief, adventure, friendship, self discovery, and the teachings of Good vs. Evil, with Evil always losing.
    Good:
Harry Potter-Humble, good, courageous and curious
Hermione-Waking up in the middle of the night to run to your books and get half way through your notes to realize...you've already taken that exam. Hilarious
Ron-scratch that, The Wesley Brother: (mainly Ron, and Fred and George) the most hilarious characters I think I've ever come across. Wish they were real...I'm in love with the whole family
    Bad:
    Nothing here.
Overall (Writing style, story line, and general):
Overall Rowling manages to put across her meanings and provide a clear picture through few words allowing for an adventure every page that everyone follows and no one questions. She answers every question that needs to be answered in this novel and somehow manages to set up plots for books that will happen far into the future from when this was released, and I can't help but ask how? Her imagination and planning must have been meticulous, and it paid off.

My 2nd time reading: I really enjoyed it - again!

Harry Potter's parents died when he was a baby. He was raised by his aunt and uncle, who hated his parents, hate him, and tell him nothing about his family history. On his 11th birthday, he discovers that he is a wizard and has been invited to attend Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

I really enjoyed my first reread of this first Harry Potter book. I've been interested in rereading the series for a long time, to remind myself of details left out of the movies. There was much more focus on Harry's life with his aunt and uncle, and it was fun starting over, as Harry meets the teachers and students at Hogwarts, and makes friends with Hermione and Ron. I had forgotten what an annoying goody-two-shoes Hermione had been! Once again, I really enjoyed it!

What kind of boy has a lightning bolt-shaped scar on his forehead, can win a duel to the death and can learn to play Quidditch? A boy who is actually a wizard! In Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the forlorn Harry goes to live under the stairs in his uncle's house after his parents die in a car crash. Then he learns who he truly is: a budding wizard with powers that will soon rival those of the evil wizard who killed his parents. J.K. Rowling writes a magical, Dahlesque novel for young adults that combines the traditional fairy tale with pranks and tricks. In the United Kingdom and the United States, this book is known as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. This is a gift edition which is bound in cloth and features gilt-edged pages.

About the Author

J. K. (Joanne Kathleen) Rowling, July 31, 1965 J. K. Rowling was born at Chipping Sodbury General Hospital in Gloucestershire, U. K. on July 31, 1965 to Anne and Peter Rowling. Two years later, her sister Dianne was born. Rowling attended Tutshill Primary and then went on to Wyedean Comprehensive where she was made Head Girl in her final year. Her University years she spent at Exeter University, where she received a degree in French. She later took some teaching classes at Moray House Teacher Training College and a teacher-training course in Manchester, England. This extensive education created a perfect foundation to spark the Harry Potter series that Rowling is renowned for. After college, Rowling moved to London to work for Amnesty International, where she researched human rights abuses in Francophone Africa, and worked as a bilingual secretary. In 1992, Rowling quit office work to move to Portugal and teach English as a Second Language. There she met and married her husband, a Portuguese TV journalist. But the marriage dissolved soon after the birth of their daughter, Jessica. It was after her stint teaching in Portugal that Rowling began to write the premise for Harry Potter. She returned to Britain and settled in Edinburgh to be near her sister Di, and attempted to at least finish her book, before looking for another teaching job. Rowling was in fact working as a French teacher in June of 1997 when she heard the news that her book would soon be published by London agent Christopher Little, in association with Bloomsbury Children's Books. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was published in June of 1997 and was an overnight sensation. It won the British Book Awards Children's Book of the Year and was shortlisted for the Guardian Fiction Award. Her first book also received a "Commended" citation in the Carnegie Medal awards. She also received 8,000 pounds from the Scottish Arts Council, which contributed to the finishing touches on The Chamber of Secrets. Rowling continued on to win the Smarties Book Prize three years in a row, the only author ever to do so. At the Bologna Book Fair, Arthur Levine from Scholastic Books, bought the American rights to Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for the unprecedented amount of $105,000.00. The book was retitled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone for it's American release, and proceeded to top the Best Seller's lists for children's and adult books. The American edition won Best of the Year in the School Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, Parenting Magazine and the Cooperative Children's Book Center. It was also noted as an ALA Notable Children's Book as well as Number One on the Top Ten of ALA's Best Books for Young Adults. Her consecutive books in the series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, have taken first, second and third place on the New York Times Bestseller List for three years in a row. Rowling planned on the series being a culmination of seven books, one for each year of the main character's attendance at the Wizard's School. In a promising development for the new author, Warner Brothers bought the movie rights to the first two books of Harry Potter for a very substantial amount of money and has turned out three very successful installments of movies faithfully based on the books.
