Have A Little Faith: A True Story

by Mitch Albom

Hyperion | September 29, 2009 | Hardcover

What if our beliefs were not what divided us, but what pulled us together? In Have a Little Faith, Mitch Albom offers a beautifully written story of a remarkable eight-year journey between two worlds-two men, two faiths, two communities-that will inspire readers everywhere. Albom's first nonfiction book since Tuesdays with Morrie, Have a Little Faith begins with an unusual request: an eighty-two-year-old rabbi from Albom's old hometown asks him to deliver his eulogy. Feeling unworthy, Albom insists on understanding the man better, which throws him back into a world of faith he'd left years ago. Meanwhile, closer to his current home, Albom becomes involved with a Detroit pastor-a reformed drug dealer and convict-who preaches to the poor and homeless in a decaying church with a hole in its roof. Moving between their worlds, Christian and Jewish, African-American and white, impoverished and well-to-do, Albom observes how these very different men employ faith similarly in fighting for survival: the older, suburban rabbi embracing it as death approaches; the younger, inner-city pastor relying on it to keep himself and his church afloat. As America struggles with hard times and people turn more to their beliefs, Albom and the two men of God explore issues that perplex modern man: how to endure when difficult things happen; what heaven is; intermarriage; forgiveness; doubting God; and the importance of faith in trying times. Although the texts, prayers, and histories are different, Albom begins to recognize a striking unity between the two worlds-and indeed, between beliefs everywhere. In the end, as the rabbi nears death and a harsh winter threatens the pastor's wobbly church, Albom sadly fulfills the rabbi's last request and writes the eulogy. And he finally understands what both men had been teaching all along: the profound comfort of believing in something bigger than yourself. Have a Little Faith is a book about a life's purpose; about losing belief and finding it again; about the divine spark inside us all. It is one man's journey, but it is everyone's story.

    Intriguing

I did not think that I was going to like this book when I first started reading it, do to the fact that I an not a religionist person. How ever, as the book evolved I became intriged by it. Mitch wrote this book the same way as he did with his previous books, Tuesdays With Morrie and The Five People You Meet In Heaven, which I liked and it also touch my heart a little as the book ended. If you have read or have heard of Mitch Albom and any of his books, then you should give this book a try. Then you can be the judge for yourself if it changes you views on religion and on your own faith. I do recommend this book.

I have read "For One More Day" and "The Five People You Meet in Heaven" by Mitch Albom. He reveals more of himself in this true story and it is every bit as entertaining as the first two I read.

I am a great fan of Mitch Albom, from his newspaper columns to his books. The Five People you Meet in Heaven ranks in my top 10 books of all time. This was a good book. Not as good as 5 People. But a good book. I liked its uplifting message of hope. I liked the parallels between two men in different states, with different backgrounds, trying through different methods to achieve the same end. Even though the book is about faith, it was very approachable and in no way attempt to persuade you as to any particular denomination. The last line of the book is a treasure - and the pages that precede it are worth your time!

This book was an joy to read. How could a book that makes you think so much be so easy to read. I had not read any other of Mitch Albom's books but now have ordered a couple.
He made me feel sorry that I had not met the 'Reb'.
I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone from the most open to the most skeptical.

I really enjoy Mitch Albom's writing. But I think that I prefer his fiction to non-fiction. This book was interesting in its protrayal of faith and was beatifully written. But overall it didn't really make me want to stand up and take notice, like his fictional works have. Personally, I prefer "The Five People You Meet in Heaven" to this.

Again Mitch Albom was able to draw me into his life and experiences. The book has the ability to capture your heart, mind and soul. I can only hope to meet as many extraordinary people in my lifetime. This book will make you laugh and cry but more importantly it will help you reflect on the person you can only hope to be. This is a great Christmas gift for special people in your life.

I really enjoyed reading this novel. I found myself unable to stop reading it at times, rightfully knowing that I have to wake up insanely early for work in the AM :)
It covers the basics of faith, understanding, compassion, human dignity and respect. Despite the many things that goes on in our day to day lives, we must have faith in our community, our families, and what lies ahead in the afterlife, once we all leave this earth we call "home". Good read. Good after-thoughts.

I have read every book written by Mitch Albom. He has always been one of my favorite authors and once again, he has not disappointed. This book was wonderful....just like all the rest. I wasn't so sure that I wanted to read this particular book because it has to do with religion. I am not the most religious person in the world and wasn't sure what to expect. I passed by this particular book at the bookstore many a time and kept on passing it for a while but decided to read it because it was a "Mitch Albom" book. I am very glad that I read it.
I think I have a little faith, myself now.

Although I didn't know if I would like this book because it was all about religion, I picked this up because I loved Mitch's other books. This one is based on his own personal experience with his Rabbi and how, though Mitch has really shied away from his Jewish faith, he wants Mitch to give his eulogy. It also has a tie in with a convicted felon turned pastor. Reb's (that's what he calls his Rabbi) story of his faith in God, and his philosophies on life, were comical at times but very touching. And Pastor Henry's journey through the deep world of addiction finally brings him to stick with Christianity, and become a man of God. The two worlds yet so different by faith and custom, are so equally the same on the values of generosity and the love you can share with all. Which is what this book I believe is really about. Also Mitch has decided to give 10% of the profits from this book to charity including the Hole In The Roof Foundation. To see more about Pastor Henry's cause and others like his visit www.aholeintheroof.com.

Mitch Albom has done it again! Writing about Life Lessons from a Dying Rabbi makes us realize how Precious Life is and the Struggles of the Homeless helps us Appreciate how lucky we truly are….and at the end of the day; we are all God's children regardless of our Faith…..To Believe is To Achieve. Now that's deep!

If you liked "Tuesdays with Morrie" you'll love "Have a little Faith".

    I've Got FAITH!

    Daisy Andreas

I had the opportunity recently to receive an advanced copy of Mitch's Albom's forthcoming book, HAVE A LITTLE FAITH. I've been a fan of his books since TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE, and have been anticipating this - his first non-fiction book - since its release.

In a nutshell, Mitch profiles two people: a rabbi who he has been asked to write a eulogy for, and an inner-city convict turned pastor. Two very different worlds, two very different religions, but one strongly shared similarity : FAITH.

The question Albom asks is: "what if faith wasn't what divided us, but what brought us together?" In a world where SOOO many wars are started in the name of religion and holier-than-thou attitudes prevail amongst so many different groups, it seems like all of our problems would be solved if only we could just say, "Hey, I have faith, you have faith...however we get there doesn't matter. What matters is that we both BELIEVE." Doing good for others is sometimes the greatest way to experience pure joy. If we all gave a little more of ourselves unselfishly, I do believe that peace would prevail.

My question to you is, do you think that its that simple? Do you think we'll ever be able to overcome our differences and come together in the name of pure faith? I truly believe we can. But we need to set aside our self-righteousness and anger and come together for the common good, not only of ourselves, but of all mankind.

This book is REALLY a good read. Beyond the story and the characters (which in true Albom style, are perfectly painted), the message is really deep. It's a book that will stay with you for quite awhile. You'll want to highlight parts and dog-ear pages like I did. It's found a home next to my other spiritual favorites.
