Heaven is for Real Deluxe Edition: A Little Boy's Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back

by Todd Burpo
with: Lynn Vincent

Thomas Nelson | November 1, 2011 | Hardcover

A beautifully written glimpse into heaven that will encourage those who doubtand thrill those who believe.

-Ron Hall, coauthor ofSame Kind of Different as Me

Do you remember the hospital, Colton? Sonja said.Yes, mommy, I remember, he said. Thats where theangels sang to me.

When Colton Burpo made it through an emergency appendectomy, his familywas overjoyed at his miraculous survival. What they werent expecting, though, was the story that emerged in the months that followed-a story as beautiful as itwas extraordinary, detailing their little boys trip to heaven and back.

Colton, not yet four years old, told his parents he left his body during thesurgery-and authenticated that claim by describing exactly what his parents weredoing in another part of the hospital while he was being operated on. He talked ofvisiting heaven and relayed stories told to him by people he met there whom hehad never met in life, sharing events that happened even before he was born. Healso astonished his parents with descriptions and obscure details about heaven thatmatched the Bible exactly, though he had not yet learned to read.

With disarming innocence and the plainspoken boldness of a child, Coltontells of meeting long-departed family members. He describes Jesus, the angels, how really, really big God is, and how much God loves us. Retold by his father, but using Coltons uniquely simple words,Heaven Is for Realoffers a glimpseof the world that awaits us, where as Colton says, Nobody is old and nobodywears glasses.

Heaven Is for Realwill forever change the way you think of eternity, offeringthe chance to see, and believe, like a child.

    Inspiring read!

I'm going to start this review by admitting that I'm not the most religious person. I won't get into details, but I've been pretty ignorant about a lot of religious and spiritual topics for a long time-knowing the basics, but not feeling like I should really dive in and learn more.

A little boy named Colton changed my outlook.

Heaven Is For Real is the story of Colton Burpo, a little boy who had to undergo surgery for a ruptured appendix. He came out of the surgery after the family went through so many emotions and led them on a journey through the beauty of Heaven-because he had been there.

The story is quite a short read-easily consumed within an evening. It's hard not to grow attached to Colton, who loves to play superhero, or with his Lego, as he's the epitome of the 4-year-old boy. We learn a little bit about the Burpo family and see that disaster strikes all people-including those who serve in the church.

The writing style is quite simple-short chapters, no really heavy passages (though, for some, the book's entire premise is a heavy topic). The book was co-written with Lynn Vincent and I wonder how much of the novel may have been "spiced up" in order to make it more of an intriguing read.

There may be skepticism over such accounts as Colton's-even if you don't believe in Heaven, there's still the possibility that it could be out there and we're only relying on accounts such as Colton's to let us know what it's like. I'm not going to lie, I always wonder if there's someone out there who really crafted the Bible-it's hard for me not to question sometimes if it's just a scam or a money-grabber, but then I wonder if that means I don't believe? I know there must be a higher power out there and I'm sure we all want to be reassured that there's something else out there for us after we die, that it's not the end of all thought-the end of love.

Heaven Is For Real is an inspiration for believers and non-believers alike. It will open your eyes and really make you think about what might really be out there after we die. And if you're a little bit afraid of the whole "death" part of it-and you're not alone-young Colten will provide comfort to you, taking your hand and reassuring you that it might not be so bad after all.

Just a couple of years ago I had the same surgery as Colton--to read about a four year old go through that was heart breaking. His journey to heaven and back was unbelievable; at times I must admit I wasn't sure if the experiences had been altered a little bit to fit the story line. Nonetheless if you are a believer in Jesus and God, this book will most definitely brighten your day.

Approximately 8 years ago, little Colton Burpo had an incredible experience where, during emergency surgery for a burst appendix, he journeyed to heaven. He recovered from the surgery, and upon waking started sharing clear details about what occurred. Heaven is for Real documents this true story of what occurred, as told by his father Todd, but also including Colton's own words of what he saw, everything from seeing the horse Jesus rode to the people that he met while in Heaven.

Heaven is for Real is well-written, conveying an almost unbelievable story that some may be sceptical to trust. I encourage people to put aside their scepticism until the end and simply soak in the truths that are conveyed by this book, about God's love for his children and the awesome place that God is preparing for us. I did not read anything that disagreed with what the Bible speaks of about heaven, although there are some details that we will just have to wait to find out if they are true or not, such as whether we will have wings or not! Todd writes with a refreshing honesty about his struggles and his reactions to the circumstances that he experienced, and readers are sure to relate to his story while being intrigued by Colton's words.

The message of this book is one of hope and comfort, and it would be difficult to read this book and not come away inspired and excited to be in Heaven. So many people have the wrong view of heaven, as if it is a place where we will sit around bored playing our harps. People with this view should definitely consider reading this book to stretch their minds and their imaginations and their faith to consider all that God has in store for them. The deluxe edition contains all the great material as the original book, but adds to that a 16-page color photo section and a "Reflecting on Heaven" guide.

I highly recommend this book, as it has the potential to change the lives of those who read it, and give it 5 out of 5 stars.
