Hickory Dickory Dock

by Agatha Christie

Harpercollins (uk) | July 11, 2002 | Mass Market Paperbound

The new-look series of Hercule Poirot books for the 21st century.

An outbreak of kleptomania at a student hostel was not normally the sort of crime that aroused Hercule Poirot′s interest. But when he saw the list of stolen and vandalised items - including a stethoscope, some old flannel trousers, a box of chocolates, a slashed rucksack and a diamond ring found in a bowl of soup - he congratulated the warden, Mrs Hubbard, on a ′unique and beautiful problem′.

The list made absolutely no sense at all. But, reasoned Poirot, if this was merely a petty thief at work, why was everyone at the hostel so frightened?

    Loved it...

I read this novel about a year or so ago, hence, I cannot remember every detail about the murder, suspects and such. However, this is indeed one of my favourite Poirot novels.

Apprently, Poirot's most perfect secretary, Miss Lemon, makes a mistake for the first time in her professional career. As it turns out, Miss Lemon is worried about the kleptomania in a student hostel, where her sister works.... and from there the story begins. Kleptomania, murder, young students in 1950s London; this book has all of it.

You will really enjoy this novel, not only for another great mystery but also because of literary purposes.

    Time for Murder

Christie's mischievous plot for Poirot begins with petty thievery and escalates into serial murders at a local student hostel. Christie succeeds in presenting two alternating stories with two different crimes. As Poirot identifies the criminals, Christie shows her audience another sample of how tragedy tends to be rooted in families of noble birth.
