From the Publisher
Newly back in print, Highland Settler is an elegant and accessible introduction to an extraordinary people-the Scottish Gaels of Cape Breton and Eastern Nova Scotia. Dr. Dunn tells the story of immigration, rural settlement, and the dispersion to the industrial world by drawing on local songs and poetry and stories. In this way, Highland Settler is much more than an outsider''s view; it is also the Gaelic pioneers'' self-portrait-information we can get no other way. Called "a gem" (The Clansman), and "one of the best books yet written on the culture of the Gaels of Cape Breton" (Western Folklore), this very readable masterpiece has been considered a treasure for over fifty years.
