The night of December 19th, 1917 bore witness to the first official National Hockey League game. There were just five franchises at the time: The Montreal Canadiens, the Ottawa Senators, the Toronto Arenas, the Montreal Wanderers, and the Quebec Bulldogs, and each fought defiantly to win Lord Stanley's Cup. Over the years, the number of teams fluctuated, though in 1942, the NHL settled on six franchises: Toronto, Montreal, Detroit, Chicago, Boston and New York. The league remained unchanged with these six teams until the expansion of 1967. These teams have since become fondly known as "The Original Six".
The Original Six days of hockey were about pride, loyalty and passion for the game. Memories of this golden era of hockey will never fade. Veteran hockey historian Brian McFarlane provides personal experiences and a wealth of information about this infamous and legendary era. He brings the players, the excitement and the thrill of the game to the pages of this must-have book for anyone who has ever laced up the skates, stepped onto a fresh sheet of ice and for that brief moment felt like the Big M or the Rocket.
