I enjoyed Jennifer Welsh's review and discussion of Canada's foreign policy future. The best contribution of the book is the intelligent review of the Canadian relationship with the US. Her views are right on and very realistically balanced in what is needed and possible. Her subtle denouncement of the immature approach taken by Chretien was extremely effective. The downfall of the book is the lack of support to dramatically improve the Canadian military and bring it back to a level of sustainability and effectiveness so that Canada can have some impact on the international arena. Even her afterword defense that she supports the strengthening of the military is very weak - the book index doesnt even contain General Rick Hillier. This weakness exposes her academic background and remote view on Canada (she works as an Oxford Professor and lives in the UK). Nonetheless, this is a very important contribution to an often ignored topic.

So basically you're faulting her because her book doesn't contain a name you think it should and because she doesn't support the military as ravenously as you do?
