Robin Hood: The Legend Begins Anew

For centuries, the legend of Robin Hood and his band of thieves has captivated the imagination. Now the familiar tale takes on new life, fresh meaning, and an unexpected setting.

Hunted like an animal by Norman invaders, Bran ap Brychan, heir to the throne of Elfael, has abandoned his father''s kingdom and fled to the greenwood. There, in a primeval forest of the Welsh borders, danger surrounds him--for this woodland is a living, breathing entity with mysterious powers and secrets, and Bran must find a way to make it his own if he is to survive.

Steeped in Celtic mythology and the political intrigue of medieval Britain, Stephen R. Lawhead conjures up an ancient past and holds a mirror to contemporary realities. Prepare yourself for an epic tale that dares to shatter everything you thought you knew about Robin Hood.

    "A Great Story"

This is a wonderful re-telling of the tale of Robin Hood. Lawhead has chosen to re-create the story in a new and different way, using ideas from the old legends and songs written about Robin Hood. The book is well-written, drawing you into the story and the lives of the characters. I like the detail with which Lawhead writes, from the development of characters to descriptions of the land in which they live to the feelings of the people as they are losing their freedom. It was a very enjoyable and worthwhile read.

This is more like it. Not a suspiciously overly jubilant pompous sharp-shooter in tights swinging from trees- this mean, bruised and bleeding outlaw has a real score to settle. There is an essay at the end of the book which should be read first, so that you can understand why Lawhead set the story in Wales, not England, and in 1093, the time of William Rufus, not King John. William Rufus (William II, or Red William), is the son of the William I (the Conqueror of the famous 1066 Invasion of England), so in this story, much of England had already been settled by the Normans, who were also continuing further attempts into Wales. Set in a difficult & tumultuous time, when the fates of the last of the fighting British trying to save their lands would have hung in the balance. The second book introduces Will Scarlet, and I plan to read that.

As usual another astounding version of the one of lifes great tales. I could not have envisioned a better way to show a realistic caption of Robin Hood. Just like in the Arthur Pendragon cycle of stories, it pulls you in until you just can't stop yourself from falling in love with ancient lore. Thanks again.

About the Author

Novelist Stephen R. Lawhead was born in July 2, 1950 in Kearney, Nebraska. He graduated from Kearney State College. He later left that job to manage a Christian rock band and begin Ariel Records (which lasted only a year). He wrote his first novel, In the Hall of the Dragon King (1982) to try to support his family. This launched his literary career.
