How It All Vegan!: Irresistible Recipes for an Animal-Free Diet

by Tanya Barnard, Sarah Kramer

ARSENAL PULP PRESS | September 30, 1999 | Trade Paperback

Sarah and Tanya are long-time friends and self-described "lazy vegetarians" whose love of animals made them want to completely eliminate animal products from their diet. Their decision to "go vegan" was a challenge not only to their palate but to their way of thinking about food and nutrition. With some imagination and a little know-how, the transition to a vegan lifestyle can be painless. And as Sarah and Tanya demonstrate in How It All Vegan!, vegan food is fabulous food, full of flavour and all the nutrients you need.

Two-colour throughout, the book''s chapters include entrees, soups, sauces, breads, salads, and desserts; there are recipes for blue banana muffins, mushroom barley stew, chocolate cheese-less cake, tofu jerky, and vegan versions of ice cream, mayonaisse, and Sloppy Joes. There are even instructions on turning other aspects of your life vegan: recipes for cosmetics, hair products, pet treats, and household cleaners.

With its campy ''50s style illustrations, unusual concoctions, and cool, punky sensibility, How It All Vegan! will tempt readers to animal-proof their diet and join the Vegan Empire.

I remember when this book first came out 10 years ago and we were promoting it at the health food store I was working at, I'm kicking myself for not buying it then! I spotted it in a used bookstore window recently and scooped it up (sorry chapters). I think the recipes are still relevant today and no vegan kitchen should be without it in their cookbook library.

This was the first vegan cookbook that I didn't have to even debate whether a recipe might be good before making it. Great recipes, easy to make, and omnivore friendly.

wow, this book is amazing! i got soooooooo many ideas from this
book about so many different ways of cooking, it has been such an
inspiration. my definite faves are the ice cream, parmasen
sandwiches (soooo yummy), and the roasted veggies... all of which i
have created and expanded my own dishes with (try adding ground
coffee beans to the icecream YUM!)... this is the most amazing cook
book i've ever owned, so easy, so simple and quick and everything
you need for almost everything you probably already have in your
    cupboards!

what a snazzy cookbook. on top of the fresh and funky look of the thing, the recipes are great. it's so awesome that they include household recipes, too. and i really like how whenever a recipe calls for something, like vegan mayo or whatnot, there will be a recipe for that on another page so that you can really make your recipes as healthy and inexpensively as possible. i have become hopelessly addicted to their recipe for fabulous french dressing. mmmmm.....

I am currently in the Katimavik program and this book was given to us by a nutritionist. I became a vegitarian 4 months ago and this book has given me an extrordinary amount of help! When my veggie friend and I had to cook for the group we used this book as our guide and even the non-vegitarians loved the recipies! This book has really helped me open my eyes to the many uses of Tofu and other supplements! I highly recommend everyone to buy this book because it makes cooking fun, fast, easy and is extremely healthy! Even helped with one of the girls in our group who's lactose intolerent! Vegitarianism is slowly becoming one of the top healthiest trends around; what a good trend indeed! Once you get into this book you'll be addicted and never go back!!

"How it All Vegan" is my favourite veggie cookbook. The recipes are great and they call for ingredients that are already in my cupboard. I love the fact that vegans can eat everything in the book, unlike most veggie cookbooks where dairy and eggs sneak in everywhere. Maybe if we buy lots of copies, they'll make us another one!

This cookbook really works to help you realize that eating and being Vegan is within your reach. I have been debating the switch to Vegan for several years. I am still not their yet, but this book helps because it makes it seem do-able. Other books that I have read on the subject made it seem more difficult. This book really makes me feel like I can do it. Steph

this is the best vegan cookbook I know of, and among the best vegetarian cookbooks I know. everything I make from it is a treat. the layout and style of the book are friendly and relaxed and the information is detailed. I love the 40 things to do with vinegar section, the vegan breads and muffins and vegan desserts sections, and the vegan house and home section. I've had a lot of fun with this cookbook.

I picked up this book, honestly, because of the cover: two punkrock girls showing off a great big vegan cake! But what's inside the book is really the best part... personal stories, vegan tips and advice, a list of animal-ingredients... but the best part of all is all the great recipes! I have tried 3 in two days and they have all been the best vegan food I have ever eaten (potato soup, lasagna, coconut cookies)... Either I have had really bad luck with other vegan cookbooks or this cookbook just knows how to fulfil a hungry vegan! Either way, buy this book and have fun cooking, eating, and being vegan again!

Two very unique women have put together a truly unique book. Interesting sections include the authors' personal stories, chapters on creating your own health and beauty products, house cleaning solutions and animal treats in the kitchen. I especially like the chapter Vegan Kid Stuff, which includes
a section called Fun in the Kitchen. Really great book!
