How To Be Good: A Novel

by Nick Hornby

Berkley Trade | May 2, 2002 | Trade Paperback

Katie Carr is a good person. She recycles. She''s against racism. She''s a good doctor, a good mom, a good wife....well, maybe not that last one, considering she''s having an affair and has just requested a divorce via cell phone. But who could blame her? For years her husband''s been selfish, sarcastic, and underemployed, writing the "Angriest Man in Holloway" column for their local paper.

But now David''s changed. He''s become a good person, too-really good. He''s found a spiritual leader. He has become kind, soft-spoken, and earnest. He''s even got a homeless kid set up in the spare room. Katie isn''t sure if this is a deeply-felt conversion, a brain tumor-or David''s most brilliantly vicious manipulation yet. Because she''s finding it more and more difficult to live with David-and with herself.

"Hornby pulls off the seemingly impossible: He tackles marriage and the nature of benevolence from a woman''s point of view without sacrificing his impish charm." (New York)

While this book wasn't overly exciting, it was very easy and quick to read. Nick Hornby has certainly written better.

Humorous and nice flow of writings. Good and thought-provoking on the topic of what is "being good". Characters are a bit too extreme - all seem to be full of anger. The idea of superficial kindness (Katie) versus being good but without love (David). I was attracted by the title of how to be good, but after reading the book I was a bit disappointed by the lack of "deep enough" coverage of the story - it could be just a little bit stronger! Anyway, an entertaining, and hilarious read. Really like it.

Confusing...boring...not up to Hornby's usual standards.

How Not to be Good: A Novel

I only recently heard about the wonders of Nick Hornby's writing, and, in response, decided to pick up this book. It has some great insights into what is considered "good" by society, whether it is being a doctor, giving money to the homeless, or providing a bed for those less fortunate. I found it difficult to connect to this book, as well as its characters, and found myself rushing through it just so I wouldn't have to read it anymore. I've since read other Hornby novels, and enjoyed them much more than this one. I also was not a fan of the title, and I realized that people must have thought I was reading a cheesy self-help book.

    No Sense

Although it took me about 3 tries to get through the book, I was enjoying it around the middle but then the end just ends so quickly. I didn't understand it and I put the book down thinking how much time I had just wasted trying to get through it to get the end that doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

This one's worth a pass but I did like his other books.

This is an interesting book. Not particularly engrossing, just interesting. I didn't love the conclusion I must say, but Hornby is very good at expressing how a good number of us probably actually feel. I found this book somewhat depressing, but thought provoking none the less.

This book was amazing! I coudln't put it down! Some parts utterly threw me for a loop. I thought How could someone be like this? But people are and it goes to show that no matter how good we think we are, someone else will be more good or want us to be more good. It's a reminder to be true to yourself.

Hornby does it again. He will never stop amazing me with his books. How to be Good is a slight change from Hornby's usual writings. Its about this girl named Katie, who has a husband that undergoes a sort of "spiritual" change. She has to put up with him. He actually brings home a homeless man to have dinner with them.

I would say this book goes right up there with the Hornby classic "About a Boy".(READ THAT BOOK TOO!)

These are very good books. This book is funny and the ending will even make you cry. I recommend this book for someone who has trouble laughing and getting in touch with their emotions.

I couldn't put this book down. Read this book as soon as you can!!
