How To Be Good: A Novel

by Nick Hornby

Penguin Group USA, Inc | May 1, 2002 | Trade Paperback

Katie Carr is a good person. She recycles. She''s against racism. She''s a good doctor, a good mom, a good wife....well, maybe not that last one, considering she''s having an affair and has just requested a divorce via cell phone. But who could blame her? For years her husband''s been selfish, sarcastic, and underemployed, writing the "Angriest Man in Holloway" column for their local paper.

But now David''s changed. He''s become a good person, too-really good. He''s found a spiritual leader. He has become kind, soft-spoken, and earnest. He''s even got a homeless kid set up in the spare room. Katie isn''t sure if this is a deeply-felt conversion, a brain tumor-or David''s most brilliantly vicious manipulation yet. Because she''s finding it more and more difficult to live with David-and with herself.

"Hornby pulls off the seemingly impossible: He tackles marriage and the nature of benevolence from a woman''s point of view without sacrificing his impish charm." (New York)

While this book wasn't overly exciting, it was very easy and quick to read. Nick Hornby has certainly written better.

Humorous and nice flow of writings. Good and thought-provoking on the topic of what is "being good". Characters are a bit too extreme - all seem to be full of anger. The idea of superficial kindness (Katie) versus being good but without love (David). I was attracted by the title of how to be good, but after reading the book I was a bit disappointed by the lack of "deep enough" coverage of the story - it could be just a little bit stronger! Anyway, an entertaining, and hilarious read. Really like it.

Confusing...boring...not up to Hornby's usual standards.

Hornby does it again. He will never stop amazing me with his books. How to be Good is a slight change from Hornby's usual writings. Its about this girl named Katie, who has a husband that undergoes a sort of "spiritual" change. She has to put up with him. He actually brings home a homeless man to have dinner with them.

I would say this book goes right up there with the Hornby classic "About a Boy".(READ THAT BOOK TOO!)

These are very good books. This book is funny and the ending will even make you cry. I recommend this book for someone who has trouble laughing and getting in touch with their emotions.

I couldn't put this book down. Read this book as soon as you can!!
