by Bruce Lord

iUniverse Star | November 14, 2008 | Trade Paperback

What would you do if you suspect your best friend, who happens to be a giant egg, was killed but everyone else thinks it was an accident? Humpty Dumpty Was Pushed, a collection of twenty-two short fairy tale-like stories, tackles that question and many more.

In this collection''s title story, Chicken Little is certain his friend did not fall from the ledge, and he intends to prove there is a conspiracy. Will he discover the truth before it''s too late? Filled with interesting and delightful characters, these short stories ask questions not raised before. Can a reverse vampire find true love? Can the World Nose Hair champion really make the world a better place? Is it ever wise to stick cheese noodles in your nose? Can one live their life squeezing other people''s ears in peace? If a whale and a tiger had a fight who would win?

Incorporating familiar characters in children''s literature and folklore, Humpty Dumpty Was Pushed tells a series of tales with surprises to keep you guessing. Each story asks a different question, and each story offers a different, strange answer.

    Disappointed

To be fair, I don't think it is entirely the book's fault (or the authors') that I didn't enjoy this book. First off, I don't know why but i was expecting an adult version of the fairy tales - a la...a funny version of Gregory Maguire- (in my defense I didn;t find the book in the kids section) and it followed my reading of The Tale of Despereaux (which is beautifully written) so I found the writing extremely sloppy and the dialogue forced and corny even for a children's tale. Not something I would recommend.

continued from above... My son was captivated and just recently asked me detailed questions about the title story "Humpty Dumpty was Pushed". He had retained specifics about it and other stories from the book from over a year ago! That to me is a clear indication that the stories are special to him. An 11 year old girl I know just selected one of the stories for a book report because it had such an impact on her. So I strongly disagree that children don't enjoy the stories. I myself enjoy them too as it appeals both to my immature gross loving side as well as to my more mature side that enjoys stories that challenges the big questions about the meaning of life.

It sounds like the store misshelved the book. I found it in 9-12 year olds. Both my son and I loved the book and have had the honour of hearing some of the stories brought to life through Bruce Lord's storytelling performances.

Thoroughly agree with this review. I also found this book in the adult stacks. Actually in the recommended section. This is something akin to what I may have read in junior high. I was really looking forward to reading it, but enjoyed none of it

These 22 stories are magical - guaranteed to tickle the funny bones of everyone from 7 to 97. This unique collection is fresh and clever: a terrific mixture of the absurd, the ridiculous, the grotesque, and the heart-warming. Both kids and adults will love the humour - my son loves "Gretta and the Cheese Noodle" and "Super Duper Noodle Poodle" and the very first story in which Chicken Little tries to convince people that Humpty Dumpty's unfortunate demise was no accident. So many of these stories are truly "great" stories but do yourself a favour and save the best one for last."The Last Day" details the struggle of Enid, an insect who is self aware that her species only lives for one day. Her coming to terms with her own mortality, a reminder to us all that life is precious and short, is a remarkable tale and one of the finest stories I have ever read. This book, full of strange, twisted, and funny tales, also has an underlying current full of wisdom. Interwoven within the humour is a clear message that hope and love are powerful forces needing to be embraced by all. A book that everyone can enjoy, Humpty Dumpty Was Pushed is laugh out loud funny and so much more. This book will add immense joy into any reader's day, young or old. Simply fantastic stuff!

It is not everyday that you get to meet the author of a great book, but to actually know the person and to see them when they pop into your store occasionally, it is pretty darn amazing and cool!

My sister actually read this book before I got a chance to, and completed it in one day! I asked her what she thought of it and she said "it's so random! But it's so funny and good!" (hence the review title).
My favs are 'Humpty Dumpty Was Pushed', 'Billy and His Tragic Nose Hair', 'If a Whale and a Tiger' and 'The Last Action Librarian' (my absolute favorite of the whole book).

This book is terribly funny and sarcastic. It's one of those books that is perfect for young readers and also for adults, so the whole family can pass it around to laugh, giggle and enjoy this book together.

For some reason this website does not give a synopsis/description of this book, SO for those of YOU that are INTERESTED, here is the back cover says:

Fun and Scary and Gross!! I will never look at nose hairs the same way again. The story with the hat feels like a Robert Munsch (?) tale. It's a very varied and eclectic collection that's sure to entertainment. btw, Whale, Whale, Whale, Whale, Whale!
