I Can See You

by ROSE KAREN

Grand Central Publishing | July 6, 2011 | Hardcover

New York Times bestselling author Karen Rose delivers her latest pulse-pounding suspense novel, where the line between the virtual world and everyday reality blurs when it comes to murder.

Eve Wilson''s face was once scarred by a vicious assault. Terrified and ashamed, she escaped to the online realm, where she could choose the face she allowed people to see. Years later, her outer scars faded and inner scars buried, Eve has fought her way back to the real world and is determined to help others do the same. Now a graduate student moonlighting as a bartender, Eve researches the addictive powers of online communities. When her test subjects begin turning up dead as a result of apparent suicides, she doesn''t know where to turn.

Homicide detective Noah Webster is one of the few people who believe the victims are connected murders. Eve becomes Noah''s online guide and realizes that the handsome detective may have secret scars as painful as her own. As Eve and Noah chase a killer who is always one step ahead of them, together they try to overcome the tragedies of their pasts and learn to trust again, but they soon discover that danger is much closer than they think.

A page turner with a strong creep factor, brilliant characters and a riveting plot.

Rose has always managed to make her villains gruesome and really authentic to real-life serial killers. Never have I picked up her book and found the killer to go half way. The level of creepiness seems to just get stronger and stronger with each book I read from her. She's got a unique way of writing the killer's point of view and diving into their mind. So when you get snap shots of his excursions you sometimes wish you could delete the sick thrill that you read because it definitely leaves a disturbing imprint.

Eve was probably one of the strongest females I've read from Rose. Being a victim twice before and dying 'twice' definitely created a spin and driving force for Eve's actions. Still, Rose managed to blend Eve's in your face attitude with the vulnerability any surviving victim holds on to. It was heart breaking reading as Eve got taunted about her previous assault, stabbing and strangulation and it added to the killer's disturbing mind.

I'm definitely intrigued by this 'hat squad' and I'm going to have to Google to get some more facts. Noah reminded me of Joe Friday off of the old radio show Dragnet, especially with the noir style that Rose incorporated into this book. Hoping that we get of the 'hat squad' in future books.

I did figure out who the killer was earlier on but I didn't find it ruined the plot/story for me. Her characters, as always, are so vivid that you're drawn in and curious about what the killer will do next and how it'll affect the cast.

If you're looking for a dark and creepy book I highly recommend this one.

    Absolutely great as always

Karen Rose is one of my favorite authors if not the one. This book is absolutely great. My level of anticipation just looking at the book before starting reading is big because I know it will be worth reading it, that it will contain all I look for in a book (thriller, suspense, attraction). I love the fact that she brought back Evie. She was and still is an attaching character. And as always, I read this book in no time because I couldn't put it back before the end of it. Now, I have to wait for her next book with my usual longing.

    A Thrilling Read

    Linda Mai Ellen

I find this book has the right blend of suspense, intrigue and romance. The plot and the subplots are fantastic, and the killer is fascinating, disturbing, but fascinating (perhaps under a psychological point of view). I would have to say that I initially did not know what I was getting into, but I've come out of it feeling like I've read one of the best thrillers there is this year.

Eve Wilson and Noah Webster are well written, each with a past that haunts them everyday, but they are both strong characters who fight to regain control of their lives. As a reader, you really hope they make it through as these two lost souls are on their own roads toward healing and looking for love, whether they actually admit it or not. Eve's grad thesis is interesting and relevant to today's world. While reading, I sometimes wished I had a project as interesting as hers, without murders on my conscience, of course. The idea of studying the impact of virtual communities on gamers is pretty darn accurate and mind-boggling. (Second Life, anyone?) I thought Eve and Noah were after one killer, but...

The story is well executed and the author just keeps you guessing. The twists and turns just keep coming. If you like crime fiction or suspense/thrillers, this book is highly recommended. I love this book. I really enjoyed the read, although it makes me a little paranoid. Be careful about what you disclose online because you never know who's watching... XP
