Immediate Action

by Andy Mcnab

Random House Publishing Group | August 16, 1996 | Mass Market Paperbound

He is one of the most highly decorated soldiers alive.  He is also the first to break the code of silence about the most elite fighting force in the world. What Andy McNab has to say is so explosive that the British government tried to stop him.

A street fighter, a hard case, and a flawless soldier, Andy McNab became one of the elite fighting men in "the Regiment"--Britain''s covert SAS.   His actions behind the lines in the Gulf War made him a hero.   But the full story of his life and his amazing career in Special Forces has remained a secret...until now.

In harrowing detail, McNab takes us inside the Regiment, chronicling nine years of covert operations on five continents.   Plunging us into a world of surveillance, counterintelligence, and hostage rescue, he takes us behind the scenes on some of their top secret missions.   For the first time, he reveals the shocking details of their training--physically severe, mentally grueling, and sometimes deadly.   And he dares to expose some of their highly confidential codes and rules--including the one that sanctions murder.

This is the story of the fighting men of the SAS.  Here is how they live.   And here is how they die...

If you liked any other Andy McNab books you'll enjoy this one as well. A great one to read before reading Bravo Two Zero. McNab begins his story as a youth and describes his life in the British Army all the way to detailed stories of his SAS missions around the world.

    But it!

This memoir may not be as touching as Frank McCourt's `Angela's Ashes' but it's much more exciting. The cover makes the book look cheesy, but it's actually quite moving sometimes. It's worth every penny of its cheap price.

I have personally read a few books on the SAS, this book probably has the most insight into the mind of the SAS men. I also recommend Bravo Two Zero by mcNab and Soldier 'I' by another ex SAS guy.

I grew up in England and vividly remember watching the storming of the Iranian embassy in London, ever since then, I've had a fascination with the SAS. This book brought it all home from the perspective of the guy next door! Its' written in a no-nonsense style without hollywood-macho-I'm-a-he-man type stuff, and it's absolutely RIVETING! McNab has such an ability to introduce you to himself, his friends and his job that you ABSOLUTELY cannot walk away until the final page! He tells his life story as it is, complete with side splitting humour and brutal tragedy. Whether you like the military or couldn't care less, this is one very engrossing and at times very FUNNY read. One of the only problems you may come across is the 'Englishisms' but these are minor and only add to its' character (read the glossary first and skip the photos until after). I can't recommend this book more... now if you'll excuse me i'm going to get back to his other non-fiction book Bravo Two Zero. Buy this and if you didn't like it (fat chance) my Email address is listed.

    Getting into the S.A.S.

McNab modestly describes the rigors of becoming a member of Britain's elite Special Air Service - the black clad figures you see in the movies who rescue the hostages, while making short work of the terrorists. He's not about machismo. McNab is a class act all the way.
It's not like the movies, but it is exciting to read about. Although "Immediate Action" was written after "Bravo Two Zero", its events occur earlier chronologically, so you should read "Immediate Action" first. Both books are very well written and captivating. The cliche "I couldn't put it down" actually applied to my experience with these books.
NOTE: If/When you read "Bravo Two Zero," don't look at the pictures if you don't want to know who dies! Get a friend to cover them up or something. I found that in the back of my mind I kept waiting to see how/when they would die.
I also recommend reading "The One That Got Away" by Chris Ryan and "Sabre Squadron" by Cameron Spence.
