Insatiable

by Meg Cabot

HARPERCOLLINS PUBLISHERS | January 17, 2012 | Hardcover

Sick of hearing about vampires? So is Meena Harper.

But her bosses are making her write about them anyway, even though Meena doesn't believe in them.

Not that Meena isn't familiar with the supernatural. See, Meena Harper knows how you're going to die. (Not that you're going to believe her. No one ever does.)

But not even Meena's precognition can prepare her for what happens when she meets?then makes the mistake of falling in love with?Lucien Antonescu, a modern-day prince with a bit of a dark side. It's a dark side a lot of people, like an ancient society of vampire hunters, would prefer to see him dead for.

The problem is, Lucien's already dead. Maybe that's why he's the first guy Meena's ever met whom she could see herself having a future with. See, while Meena's always been able to see everyone else's future, she's never been able look into her own.

And while Lucien seems like everything Meena has ever dreamed of in a boyfriend, he might turn out to be more like a nightmare.

Now might be a good time for Meena to start learning to predict her own future. . . .

If she even has one.

    The Good Stuff

Strong and sorta feisty (Starts off a little mousy but grows stronger as story progresses) heroine
Trademark Meg Cabot humour which I totally love
Love scenes are hot without being too graphic, so older YA could read too (heck I was reading Wifey at 12 so I'm not judging or making decisions for your kids)
Dialogue is laugh out loud funny - so heads up if you are reading on public transit -- or while your hubby is watching the hockey game
Storyline is exciting and keeps you flipping the pages (well in this case I was tapping the Kobo touch screen)
Got a kick out of the play of names = Meena Harper (um Meena Harker) - since Dracula is one of my favorite books you can see how this would amuse the hell out of me
Nice historically accurate research done which I was very much impressed by
The pop culture references were cute -- Cheryl Trent (obviously based on Susan Lucci), mentions of Sookie Stackhouse, etc
Male love interests are both intriguing and side characters are fun

    The Not So Good Stuff

The characters come off a little juvenile for their supposed age, but I imagine due to the fact that Cabot has been writing YA for years
The constant references to the dog's full name of Jack Bauer and why he was called that were a wee bit irritating after a while

    Favorite Quotes/Passages

".on the seat next to her, so that Meena could sit down beside her. No New Yorker would ever have done such a thing. Not when there were a dozen other empty seats on the train."

"She was never going to give up hope. Without hope, what did you have?"

"He was in Burberry," Meena said, knitting her brow. "But he definitely didn't sparkle."

"Well, the fact that he's.." Abraham looked uncomfortably at Sister Gertrude and Yalena and whispered," A basta*d."

Meena had to suppress a smile. "In America we call that being raised by a single mom," she whispered back. "And its actually not that big a deal. It happens to a lot of people."

    Who Should/Shouldn't Read

Fans of Meg Cabot's YA, Jennifer Estep, Julie Kenner and Marta Acosta will enjoy
This is like paranormal chick lit, so if you like that, you will enjoy this
Perfect light read after reading something intense or serious

This book was insatiable. Along the lines of Twilight you don't know if you should be cheering for her to be with that certain someone or someone else. Recommend to everyone!

I actually really liked the premise, and the story for most of the book...but then the events in the church!?! and the ending! Made me think the whole thing was a waste of time. It actually angered me a little to be sucked into a good story and then have to read that ending. I cannot recommend. Maybe I'll give it another chance sometime, based on the reviews here, and knowing now that there might be a sequel.

First a small rant, 460 pages and over 60 chapters? What is that, an average of 8 pages a chapter? This was driving me crazy!
Now to the story, which I did enjoy, but seemed a little rushed to me. Meena is a lovely young woman, inspiring to be a writer who's currently stuck in the position of writing lines on a local soap opera. She has a psychic ability which let's her see when someone will die. Bring in the lead male, Lucian, a centuries old vampire directly related to "Dracula". Lucian is a good guy. He does not believe in killing humans for blood and as the current ruler of the Vampires is set on enforcing this belief amongst his people. He of course is tall dark and handsome, not mention smart, romantic.... very likeable in my opinion. Meena however I had some trouble with. She's a good person and on the surface very likeable, but her indecisiveness and distrusting nature when it comes to Lucian was a big negative for me.

    Spoiler alert

The author does confirm on her site that there will be a sequel, currently scheduled for Summer 2011. As the ending left me very much unsatisfied I hope that the next book will resolve the unfished storyline.
Personally, I predict a love triangle that I am not sure I really want to read about. Don't get me wrong, Alaric grows on you. He's really not a bad guy that's a bit misinformed, but personally I didn't see enough chemistry between Meena and him and would prefer her finding her HEA with Lucian.

    My Latest Read

This isn't Meg Cabot's first attempt at the supernatural but this is definitely more mature than any of the others. At first it appears to be an attempt to keep up with the ever popular vampire theme we see everyday in the latest fiction. It suprises you by showing you the other side, the uninterested, vampires be damned side. There's romance and excitement, the unexpected and the already done. Is another vampire series on the rise? If so, I hope the books only get better from here.

A Different Angle for Meg Cabot

    Chyna

I am a HUGE Meg Cabot fan and was quite surprised that she chose to write a book with vampire characters seeing how it is such a cliche these days. I thought it was a bit tacky how she used the character names from the original Dracula, such as Meena (who is like a Sookie Stackhouse) and Jon. Not to mention how the ruler of vampires was named Lucien, which was similar to that of the ruler in Underworld and a vampire hunter by the name of Alaric, which is similar to the one in Vampire Diaries. Overall, the story line was well written and I found I was thoroughly engaged throughout. A real page turner.

    Disappointing!

As a fan of Meg Cabot's writing and the vampire genre, this book was a huge disappointment. Although I enjoyed the historical information Cabot included, the series of events was rushed, the story drawn out and repetitive, the ideas predictable, and worst of all, the characters unlikeable! I definitely won't be reading the next book in this series!

Loved it! As always Meg Cabot knows how to make one laugh out loud.
I did feel as if it was a bit rushed, but not sure if it just me reading fast.
I wish the ending was a little different but I guess it only means that there'll be a squeal.
Can't wait to see what happens between Lucien and Meena.

Yes, there's a lot of references to other popular vampire books and film.
I did like the spin on it, although most of the ideas have already been done in some shapes and forms...I still loved the spin Meg gave it. It's like having all the great vampires books I read all mixed into one.
Good read for anyone (adults that is).

    Job Well Done!

    Kate (aka YzhaBella)

Meg Cabot will WOW the paranormal reading community with this gem! From quirky comedy and intense romance to moderately grotesque violence, Insatiable has it all!

    My Synopsis
Meena, resident of the BIG City and screen writer, thought her life was ok. Nothing too spectacular... unless you consider the fact that with one look into your eyes, she can tell you when and how you are going to die. You see, Meena has a very unique form of precognition. This "gift" has always made her feel like a freak and for years she has had to endure vicious name calling and rejection by her peers. If you were to ask Meena directly, she'd say this ability was a curse, not a gift.

All Meena truly ever wanted was to become head writer for Insatiable, one of the country's longest running, and still most popular, soap operas. With the new pitch she's cooked up, she is certain the promotion is in the bag! Imagine her surprise when not only does Soshana (typical corporate airhead) get the promotion, she's got big plans for introducing a vampire angle into the Insatiable story line. Vampires? Seriously? Talk about jumping on the bandwagon! UGH! According to Meena, vampires are nothing but mythological misogynistic monsters and she is SO not on board with this entire idea. There goes the show, and there goes any hopes Meena had of capturing the coveted Head Writers position.

But, why vampires? And why Shoshanna? Up until now, Shoshana has never even been in the office long enough to handle the work she had, let alone the workload involved with a Head position. As it is, Meena is forever completing and submitting Shoshana's work. So what gives? Regardless, Meena has devised a plan to counteract Shoshana's pitch. She's going to write in a "princely" vampire slayer to sweep the leading lady off her feet and save the day! And, Meena has the perfect man in mind of who she feels she can draw great reference from to create the prefect character!

Lucien Antonescue is Meena's very own prince who's "swept in" and "saved the day"…err, night rather! He's dashing, debonair, and outrageously hot! Not only can Meena NOT see his death (which is weird, but is also a refreshing break from the usual), but he actually saved Meena from a vicious attack by a colony of bats! Lucien is Meena's "dreamboy". He's all she's ever wanted in a man. There's nothing more she could want from a lover. Heck, she's even considering moving to Romania just to stay close to him...Too bad her precognitive talents don't work on her own future. It might have saved her from nightmare and heartache!

    My Thoughts
Readers will be kept thoroughly intrigued by each turn of events and may even find themselves flipping back through the pages for clarifications and asking themselves "How did I miss that"!

Insatiable, quite interestingly, references a few historical figures, both real and mythological, on a level that nicely adds to the plot line, and are also clearly conveyed so that even those who are not "up to speed" can grasp the intended purpose of the reference.

From Joan of Arc to Dracula, Insatiable has many interesting twists and takes that will keep readers on their toes. In fact, there's one particular event, or twist rather, that really took this reader by surprise! End result, very cool!

In closing, I would like to take a moment to mention that this I am not entirely certain I liked the way the story left off. Yet again, I'm also not entirely certain that I didn't. Hmm…I am a wee bit conflicted on this point (lol, obviously) and can only hope this will be remedied soon! (Sequel currently set to be released 2011)
