    Good Read

I just finished reading Stephen King's Insomnia about ten minutes ago. My conclusion is that it was, over all, pretty good. It is true that it becomes a little tough to read in some parts round the middle, it was ultimately a very rich book. He constantly refers to previous events, and in the end, things that occurred even in the prologue tie up nicely in the end. A little too long, and not really engrossing in terms of plot, though the characters were more so. A satisfying read.

    Dust Collector #1

    Darth Indurate

This is the first book on my Dust Collector List that I have challenged myself to read this year. it has only sat on my bookshelf for, at least, 15 years. Insomnia is about this man who has difficulty sleeping, and as the amount of time he spends sleeping decreases, the number of strange goings-on in his neighbourhood increases. I liked the character of Ralph Roberts, a simple guy who must make a stand against an evil entity from another "level"; but thought the entity itself, "The Crimson King", wasn't frightening or scary at all. He looked like a giant catfish. ( Apparently, this creature is the antagonist from King's "The Dark Tower" series, and is scarier in it than here.) I also though the story could have been shortened by a couple hundred pages, but King spends so much time with his silly little rhymes and ditties, expressions that may or may not mean something later in the book, that he sometimes wanders away from the story. Still, Insomnia was an interesting read that made me wonder enough about things like sleeplessness and REM sleep that I am sure to get a little less at night. I've included (Recommend Similar Titles) Stephen King's other novels set in Derry.

    Disappointed

Without revealing too many spoilers, this book is about an elderly man named Ralph who is experiencing insomnia. There is nothing weird or scary about this of course. But it is from sleep deprivation that he sees his neighborhood in a different way, such as : strange auras surrounding everything; balloon strings rising out of people (what!); and of course three peculiar little bald men running around town(Ha Ha). Apart from trying to imagine little bald men without laughing, I also found the book unsettling every time King went in to the political subject of abortion. At the time of buying this book, I was not looking for any literature on the subject of abortion, nor was I wanting to read about a three ring circus of little bald men.
Disappointed is what best describes my feeling towards this novel. I hope this review was helpful to you.

From Our Editors

Old Ralph Roberts hasn't been sleeping well lately. Every night he wakes just a little bit earlier, and pretty soon, he thinks, he won't get any sleep at all. It wouldn't be so bad, except for the strange hallucinations he's been having. Or, at least, he hopes they are hallucinations-because here in Derry, one never can tell. Deliciously dark and chilling, Insomnia is another brilliantly executed tale of terror from Stephen King.

About the Author

Stephen King was born in Portland, Maine, on September 21, 1947, to Donald and Nellie Ruth King. King wrote his first short story before he was seven years old. As a teenager, he played on the football team and joined a rock band, but also had two of his short stories published. After graduating with a Bachelor's degree in English from the University of Maine at Orono in 1970, he married Tabitha Spruce, also a writer, in 1971, and began a career as a teacher. His spare time was spent in writing novels that were consistently rejected by publishers. King's first novel would never have been published if not for his wife. She removed the first few chapters from the garbage after King had thrown them away in frustration. Three months later, he received a $2,500 advance from Doubleday Publishing for the book that went on to sell a modest 13,000 hardcover copies. That book, Carrie, was about a girl with telekinetic powers who is tormented by bullies at school. She uses her power, in turn, to torment and eventually destroy her mean-spirited classmates. When United Artists released the film version in 1976, it was a critical and commercial success. The paperback version of the book, released after the movie, went on to sell more than two-and-a-half million copies. Many of King's other horror novels have been adapted into movies, including The Shining, Firestarter, Pet Semetary, Cujo, Misery, The Stand, and The Tommyknockers. Under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, King has written the books The Running Man, The Regulators, Thinner, The Long Walk, Roadwork, and Rage. Today, Stephen King is one of the world's most successful writers, with more than 100 million copies of his works in print. Many of his books have been translated into foreign languages, and he writes new books at a rate of about one per year. King and his wife have three children and live in the small town of Bangor, Maine, where many of his stories are set.
