Into The Fire: A Novel

by SUZANNE BROCKMANN

Random House Publishing Group | November 3, 2010 | Hardcover

Suspense doesn't burn any brighter and desire doesn't run any deeper than when Suzanne Brockmann takes the helm, opens the throttle, and takes readers along for a breathless ride as she breaks the thrill barrier-again and again. With Into the Fire, Brockmann lights the fuse on her most explosive story yet.

Vinh Murphy-ex-Marine and onetime operative for the elite security firm Troubleshooters Incorporated-has been MIA ever since his wife, Angelina, was caught in a crossfire and killed during what should have been a routine bodyguard assignment. Overcome with grief, Murphy blames the neo-Nazi group known as the Freedom Network for her death. Now, years later, Freedom Network leader Tim Ebersole has been murdered-and the FBI suspects Murphy may have pulled the trigger. To prevent further bloodshed, Murphy's friends at Troubleshooters scramble to find him and convince him to surrender peacefully.

Murphy himself can't be sure what he did or didn't do during the years he spent mourning and lost in an alcohol-induced fog. He does know he occasionally sought solace from Hannah Whitfield, a former police officer and the very friend who'd introduced him to his beloved late wife.

But Hannah, still grappling with the deafness that resulted from an injury sustained while on duty, was fighting her own battles. For years Hannah had feelings for Murphy, and one painful night their suffering brought them together in a way neither expected-and both regretted.

Murphy is ready to rejoin the living. As always, he finds himself knocking on Hannah's door, and as always, his longtime friend welcomes him back into her home. Yet even as Murphy slowly rebuilds his splintered life, he continues to fight his growing feelings for Hannah.

Then he learns of Ebersole's murder and comes to believe that the Freedom Network has targeted him-and Hannah-to avenge their leader's death to violence. Now Murphy must face the terrifying prospect of losing another woman he loves.

As the Troubleshooters desperately search for him, Murphy races toward a deadly confrontation with the Freedom Network and ultimate choice: surrender his life in hopes that Hannah will be spared, or risk everything to salvage whatever future they may have together.

This was like two books in one, but then part way through the book the stories merge. I liked Izzy and Eden's story better the Vinh and Hannah's. In this book danger does not lurk around every corner, but it does have it's fair share of it. It also has romance and humor, most of the humor comes from Izzy, I love his character. This is a book you are going to pick up and not be able to put in down, and it is well worth the read.

This book wasn’t bad, but it was so sad how Vinh can’t, I hope this doesn’t sound insensitive, move on in life. Not to mention that Hannah’s also lost her best friend’s. And I mean plural, she was to head strong to tell Vinh she loved him and stepped aside so her best friend can marry him and than, said best friend is murdered and the man she’s loved all along goes MIA. Sad situation, than to make matters worst, she’s almost gets killed as well and looses her hearing, and can barley walk again and quits her job for obvious reasons. WOW! So much happened, than to mix it up a bit we got about three to four other stories in the mixture and, as a reader we have to jump back a fourth with the story lines. I knew It would end up some where and it would all come together and make sense, and it did, but by the end I felt there was simply to much happening and I didn’t feel the connection with the two main characters and thought Vinh’s happy ending was sort of cut short. I am however looking forward to the next books, they ought to be good with all that happened in this novel, setting the mood for them and all.

I normally enjoy SB novels but this one wasn't that great - rather disappointing. This novel had multiple story lines intertwined throughout so you have to pay attention and keep up. Nothing wrong with that. The characters were just okay - many of which were built up thru earlier novels. HQN Romance novels are great for some and very tame, if not excruciatingly mushy. The storyline in this novel with Izzy & Eden were just like those from the HQN novels. This was a painful read for me. He's suppose to be a tough guy but he falls for the oldest trick & does an idiotic thing. Yes, some would say he was being chivalrous. The "couples" situation is so unravelled that it should be very interesting to see who ends up with whom. I didn't hate the book but I also didn't think it was worth raving about.

Most series writer's lose steam after a dozen or so books -- not Brockmann -- this book was amazing. Loved the inter-woven stories and can't wait to what happens next to Izzy, Dave, Decker etc...

One (non-spolier) question -- I'd like to know what "Bwee" means.
