Island of the Blue Dolphins

by Scott O'dell
Read by: Tantoo Cardinal

Random House Audio Publishing Group | May 10, 2005 | Audio Book (CD)

In the Pacific there is an island that looks like a big fish sunning itself in the sea.  Around it, blue dolphins swim, otters play, and sea elephants and sea birds abound.  Once, Indians also lived on the island.  And when they left and sailed to the east, one young girl was left behind.

This is the story of Karana, the Indian girl who lived alone for years on the Island of the Blue Dolphins.  Year after year, she watched one season pass into another and waited for a ship to take her away.  But while she waited, she kept herself alive by building a shelter, making weapons, finding food, and fighting her enemies, the wild dogs.  It is not only an unusual adventure of survival, but also a tale of natural beauty and personal discovery.

This was one of my favorite books as a kid so I wary of reading as an adult. Much to my pleasure, I thoroughly enjoyed it again; in fact I’m sure I had a better understanding of the actual historical context to which O’Dell subtly alludes. It’s a well written story of strength and survival, and leaves you feeling empowered with out the need for any sort of love story or shocking scandal which is a refreshing change.

A beautiful and haunting true story about the ingenuity of a child who in isolation, grows into a strong and courageous woman by befriending animals and surviving with determination and perseverance. A must have for any children's bookshelf.

I first read this at a friend's house when I was a little girl, because I didn't have many books (I know, boo hoo). I'm making up for that now.
Anyway, it's man-against-nature adventure, but even more exciting to me as a little girl, because it was about a young girl who gets stranded on an island with her brother. He gets killed by wild dogs and then she has to fend for herself. She must build shelter, find food and fight off the dogs. She even makes weapons, which it was forbidden for women to do. She has only one visitor in her years on the island; another young woman and they become friends. She was on the island for 18 years, from 1835-1853.
It made me wonder how I would fare in the same circumstances (not well). I then bought this book for my daughters when they were old enough to read. They also loved it. Then we discovered it was made into a movie, and we watched it together. I was pleased to see that it stayed true to the book.
Karana does eventually leave the island, in case you were wondering.

This book is a fantastic young adult read. I read it in Grade 6, and I will be happily teaching it to my Grade 8's next year. It is a story of the struggle of a girl who is left behind on an island. It is a great book to learn about different perspectives in the world. A real eye-opener for me as a child.

Back when I was a mere youngling, I remember how this book became part of a novel study. Indeed, once I read it, I identified this literary masterpiece almost at once as a book of epic proportions. Only such a work could make me so profoundly bored, so painfully depressed. Only such a book could trigger such an intense loathing.
Indeed, readers, an epic work like this deserves to be cast into the depths of the sea which it describes with so much detail, for only then will its true grandeur be appreciated by the illiterate dolphins.

Though it is a children's book, this story is one of my favorites. Everytime I read it I can't believe someone would have this kind of courage and perserverance. A recommended read to all of my friends.

This is the touching story of Karana, a young Indian who once lived on an island in the Pacific. The island was shaped like aq huge fish, sitting on the sea.It is surrounded by swimming blue dolphins, playing otters and sea birds. When the Indians left and sailed East, Karana and her brother were left behind. Karana and her brother Ramo were left to fend for themselves. They live a lonely but nice life, until Ramo is killed by wild dogs. Now Karana is truly

Soon Karana befriends the wild dogs, and adopts one of her own.Eac day she prays that the ship who took all the other Indians away will return to get her.Can she survive without civilization? Will the ship return?

Island of the Blue Dolphins was an excellent book it cange my point of view it was so sad and I felt so sorry for that little girl. I used to wish that I would be stranded on a island without anybody else but when I read that book it made me think how much I was taking my famly for granted. When her little brother was killed by the wild dogs and she swore that she would kill all of the wild dogs. But when she shouts an arrow at the packs leader she hits him in the chest and he runs off but when she finds him she coundn't kill him so she brang him back to her house that she had made and saved his life. Later on in the book you read that she see his son so she caught him and they made friends.

This book is definitely the best book I have ever read. I first read this book five years ago, when I was ten, and have read it countless times ever since. When I pick up this book I usually read it in one sitting. It is so descriptive that I can vividly imagine being right there with Karana on the lonely and barren island with her loyal dog, Rontu, as her only companion.
