I first read this at a friend's house when I was a little girl,
because I didn't have many books (I know, boo hoo). I'm making up
for that now.
Anyway, it's man-against-nature adventure, but even more exciting
to me as a little girl, because it was about a young girl who gets
stranded on an island with her brother. He gets killed by wild dogs
and then she has to fend for herself. She must build shelter, find
food and fight off the dogs. She even makes weapons, which it was
forbidden for women to do. She has only one visitor in her years on
the island; another young woman and they become friends. She was on
the island for 18 years, from 1835-1853.
It made me wonder how I would fare in the same circumstances (not
well). I then bought this book for my daughters when they were old
enough to read. They also loved it. Then we discovered it was made
into a movie, and we watched it together. I was pleased to see that
it stayed true to the book.
Karana does eventually leave the island, in case you were
wondering.
