Just Breathe

by Stephen Graham King

January 1, 2006 | Trade Paperback

In the year 2000, Stephen Graham King was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive cancer known as synovial sarcoma, beginning a four-year ordeal of radiation, chemotherapy, physiotherapy, and multiple recurrences.

After having trouble with his left knee for much of his adult life, King finally saw a doctor following a bump to the leg that almost made him pass out from the excruciating pain. After the diagnosis, he endured five major, invasive surgeries that cost him a large portion of his left leg and half of his left lung, radically changing his body, mind, and self-image forever. And in the end, forcing him to relearn many things: some as basic as re-learning how to walk.

As a gay man who is part of an image-conscious subculture within our image-driven society, he was forced to confront his feelings about his body on the long road back to health.

Now, in Just Breathe, King shares his journey from health to illness and back to health again through prose and journal entries written during the battle. Told with candour and humour, this is the story of his challenging recovery and the love of life, friends, and family that helped him to survive.

What a rare gift - this book brings to life the pain, sadness, frustration, fear, and feelings of hopelessness that the author experienced so clearly that it had me in tears. Yet, this book is simultaneously a positive, uplifting, inspirational and humour-filled read. Beyond King's physical strength to be able to withstand the poisoning of all of the drugs, chemo, radiation, and horrible surgeries, his mental and emotional strength, as well as his sense of humour, are awe-inspiring.

This is a very powerful story that will bring out many emotions within. For not only does this book tell the story of his own personal battle with such a horrible disease, but he opens his heart and allows us the opportunity to see the world through his eyes. With his descriptive tone, the reader is with Stephen from the very beginning, cheering him from the sidelines every step of the way.

I strongly recommend this to anyone who has ever been touched by cancer in their life, and even those lucky few who have not.

    A MUST READ!

Advance Praise for Just Breathe

"This is a moving, heartfelt story, full of courage and quiet grace."
- Heather Reisman, CEO of Indigo Books & Music, Inc.

"Brilliantly told, compelling, heartfelt, and beautiful. Just Breathe is a powerful read."
- Robert J. Sawyer, Hugo Award-winning author of Calculating God.

"This is a book written from the heart -- a gallant heart full of courage and hope and the love of life. It provides uncommon insight into what, unfortunately, is an all too common experience. Stephen King's account of his life as a cancer patient is, like the man himself, honest and compassionate."
- Suzanne North, author of Bones To Pick

"Stephen is a beautiful, open and friendly man who walked up to me in a mall to ask when my next book would be published. As I've come to know him better, I've realised he has quite the story to tell himself. This is that story. And you can add courage and generosity to the list of attributes."
- Nalo Hopkinson, author of The Salt Roads

"Stephen Graham King writes in a way that transcends the traditional reader-writer relationship. You don't read this book so much as you stand beside the author, his arm around your shoulder, as he lets you in on the intimate thoughts, feelings and emotions he experienced through his trials. His words are honest, touching, poignant and heartfelt; they come alive like a dear friend sharing his story across a coffee shop table"
- Mark Leslie, author of One Hand Screaming
