Keeping Faith

by Jodi Picoult

HARPERCOLLINS PUBLISHERS | April 13, 2000 | Trade Paperback

For the second time in her marriage, Mariah White catches her husband with another woman, and Faith, their seven-year-old daughter, witnesses every painful minute. In the aftermath of a sudden divorce, Mariah struggles with depression and Faith begins to confide in an imaginary friend. At first, Mariah dismisses these exchanges as a child's imagination. But when Faith starts reciting passages from the Bible, develops stigmata, and begins to perform miraculous healings, Mariah wonders if her daughter--a girl with no religious background-might actually be seeing God. As word spreads and controversy flares, Mariah and Faith are besieged by believers and disbelievers alike, caught in a media circus that threatens what little stability they have left. Building inexorably to a climactic battle for custody, Keeping Faith explores a family plagued by the media, the medical profession, and organized religion in a world where everyone has an opinion but no one knows the truth. Fascinating, thoughtful, and suspenseful, this extraordinary novel is Jodi Picoult at her best: controversial and compelling.

I really, really enjoyed this book. I'm not a religious person, but for some reason I always find books revolving around religion very fascinating. This book only intensified that. Jodie Picoult is a very talented writer; she knows how to engage the reader and tell the story so you don't ever want to put it down. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters in Keeping Faith. My one and only complaint about this novel is that everything isn't explained in the end. It leaves you unsure of what really happened.

An interesting book overall, although I feel Jodi could have shortened it considerably. The ending was confusing and unsatisfying (anticlimatic, really).

I chose to read this book because the title just simply caught my eye. It took me several chapters for this book to grab my attention, because narration of the book changed throughout the chapters. However, as I read more I started to like Jodi Picoult’s the topics that she was dealing with. Several broad different themes - religion; mother-daughter relationship; medical professions; and media and public opinions versus oneself ?were all in this one plot. It did not force me to think about the God or the “truth?in reality, but it really just made me to think carefully about things that I use to believe that are “true? I think one of Picoult’s strengths is that she manages to maintain real, relatable characters despite use of magical realism. On the other hand, I found the plot in this book to be a little heavy-handed. Also, words that she chose seem a bit jagged and leaving the stories disjointed. However, it is a wonderful and fabulous book to read. I suggest you to read it.
