Kickstart: How Successful Canadians Got Started

by Alexander Herman, Paul Matthews, Andrew Feindel

Dundurn | February 25, 2008 | Trade Paperback

In 2005, recent graduates Alex Herman, Paul Matthews, and Andrew Feindel realized they weren''t entirely sure where they were going in life. Then they had an idea. Over the next two years, they interviewed 70 well-known Canadians and asked them how they got started. The answers they found were not always what they expected.

Kickstart profiles over 30 prominent Canadians, including professional athletes (former CFL star Norman Kwong), TV personalities (Valerie Pringle), Native leaders (Matthew Coon Come), and former prime ministers (Brian Mulroney). Their collective wisdom, offered in their own words, just might help readers "kickstart" their own lives and careers.

Even though I picked Kickstart up as a career guide, I ended up treating it a lot more like a life guide. The poeple in the book talk a lot about exactly how they got started in their careers, but a lot of the most interesting stuff has to do with how they made the big decisions about what was important and of value. I've been bringing the things the people in the book said to my own life. It's quite nice to see a book with Success in the title, but having it not all about 'how to get rich' but more 'how can I leave a mark on society'.

    Therapeutic!

I found this book really helpful. Almost therapeutic too. I've just finished university and have spent the last six months travelling. I've got lots of interests, but I'm still not totally sure what to do. The stories in Kickstart really helped me begin to focus my thinking. It's great to hear what people who've really made their mark have to say about getting there. Reading their stories has helped put all the pressure (from parents, friends) etc. into perspective. I really recommend it to anyone who's still trying to figure that stuff out.

Exceptional! Each of my kids will have a copy of this book at their bedside. So should every parent that expects their child to go to law school or be a banker. These young and promising authors have taken the pressure of kids everywhere, showing them there are many paths to success.

This book is a true masterpiece that will quickly establish itself as a Canadian classic. Herman, Matthews, & Feindel demystify the Canadian corporate and professional landscape and provide a candid snapshot of "finding one's path" in today's competitive world. This is a 'MUST BUY' for any parent who has a graduating student making this significant step.
