The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight, and Saving the Planet

by Alicia Silverstone
Introduction by: Neal D. Barnard

Rodale Books | October 13, 2009 | Hardcover

In The Kind Diet, actress, activist, and committed conservationist Alicia Silverstone shares the insights that encouraged her to swear off meat and dairy forever, and outlines the spectacular benefits of adopting a plant-based diet, from effortless weight loss to clear skin, off-the-chart energy, and smooth digestion. She explains how meat, fish, milk, and cheese-the very foods we've been taught to regard as the cornerstone of good nutrition-are actually the culprits behind escalating rates of disease and the cause of dire, potentially permanent damage to our ecology. Yet going meat- and dairy-free doesn't mean suffering deprivation; to the contrary, The Kind Diet introduces irresistibly delicious food that satisfies on every level-it even includes amazing desserts to keep the most stubborn sweet tooth happy. Alicia also addresses the nutritional concerns faced by many who are new to a plant-based diet, and shows how to cover every nutritional base, from protein to calcium and beyond. Alicia knows that changing life-long dietary habits is a process, and that each person progresses at a different pace. For that reason, The Kind Diet encompasses 3 separate levels, from Flirting to Superhero. Flirts learn to dip a toe into the vegan pool, reducing their meat-eating and swapping out a few key foods for plant-based substitutes to see quickly how even small changes can reap big results. Vegans get to experience the life-altering effects of forgoing animal-products entirely, while still enjoying many convenience foods and meat substitutes in addition to the wonderful grains, vegetables and fruits that form the core of that diet. True enlightenment comes with the Superhero program, based on the principles of macrobiotics and built on a foundation of whole grains, vegetables, and other yummy foods that Alicia describes in detail.

Whether your goal is to drop a few pounds, boost your energy and metabolism, or simply save the world, Alicia provides the encouragement, the information, and the tools you need to make the transition to a plant-based diet deliciously empowering.

If you are looking to make a major lifestyle change or just looking to flirt by including some of these recipes in your hum drum weekly routine this is the book for you. She will make you think about your environment and how your food choices impact it. But she also holds your hand to help you make different choices. The recipes are super yummy, she tells you where to get some of the unique foods you may not have heard of before. I love this book and continue to use it as a reference.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Love the recipes. The peanut butter cups are awesome. This book encouraged me to finally move into the Vegan lifestyle. I have shared this book with many friends. I highly recommend it to anyone considering removing animals from their plate.

I really appreciate Alicia's passion for her diet and it shows in the book. I wish that she had added a glossary page to explain the many unusual ingredients so that one does not have to flip through all the recipes to find the definitions for Mochi, Kinpira, Gomashio, Umeboshi plum, etc... Also would be helpful to know in where to look for these items, fresh? canned? frozen? I like the book and the recipes but the ingredients are unattainable.

After toying with eating cleanly and conscientiously, reading the Kind Diet brought me to my decision to do just that. Alicia Silverstone writes with a friendly voice that feels like your smart girlfriend is sharing something wonderful with you.
This book does not come across like a preach-y, scare-you-straight message, but gives you facts and encourages you to do your own research so to arrive at your own conclusions. It then goes on to address some health and vegan myths and misunderstandings, explains that even just flirting with a vegan way of life scores big points for the flirt, the enviornment and all the Earth's creatures.
The later half of the book then addresses the food and recipes. I have tried a number of them and they are very good, however, they are not small town Canada friendly as some of the ingredients are hard to find and get your mitts on...and some of them are very expensive. (I live on Cape Breton Island and the city of Halifax and it's health food options is a four hour drive away.)
However, the recipes that I could prepare were delicious and the book has been a great reference for healthy eating questions and for motivation as Alicia cheers on the Kind Diet and living the Kind Life in a way that makes you want to join in.
I should also mention that she has started a web community, sorta like Facebook, called the Kind Life. It shares recipes from the book, tips for living a Kind Life in relation to Food, Style, Home etc. as well as sources for foods and brands, and she posts something new almost EVERYDAY.
Plus there is the added bonus of discussions with the Kind Life livin' sort of folk in the 'community'. So when your friends won't back you up or they think you're weird for announcing you don't eat animal products of any kind, the Kind Life community is there to keep you on track and support you BIG TIME.
I would HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone thinking about changing their lifestyle to live with awareness. A great jumping off point from your girlfriend Alicia.

Thanks for your review!! I have been toying with this lifestyle for a long while and just learned about Alicia's book on Oprah online last week. The best/most bizarre part is that I just moved to Cape Breton myself about a month ago and was wondering how difficult it would be to find the ingredients--thanks for the heads up! I still plan to order the book (no one has it here--I REALLY miss Chapters!!) and have been on her website as well. For your info, there is a link on her site to Spork Foods, an LA-based, gourmet vegan food company, and they will be hosting vegan cooking classes online starting in March/April. They are really great to respond to e-mail quickly too. Thanks again for the very timely and fitting review!!

Thanks Tammy! Will check out the site...And welcome to the Island. Just bought another book from Chapters online called The Vegan Cooks Bible. It's excellent too and so far, all recipes have worked and are delicious. Ingredients are more 'friendly' for us small town folk. Lots of info too. Cheers!
