The Know-It-All: One Man's Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the World

by A. J. Jacobs

Simon & Schuster | October 4, 2005 | Trade Paperback

33,000 PAGES

44 MILLION WORDS

10 BILLION YEARS OF HISTORY

1 OBSESSED MAN

Part memoir and part education (or lack thereof), The Know-It-All chronicles NPR contributor A.J. Jacobs''s hilarious, enlightening, and seemingly impossible quest to read the Encyclopaedia Britannica from A to Z.

To fill the ever-widening gaps in his Ivy League education, A.J. Jacobs sets for himself the daunting task of reading all thirty-two volumes of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. His wife, Julie, tells him it''s a waste of time, his friends believe he is losing his mind, and his father, a brilliant attorney who had once attempted the same feat and quit somewhere around Borneo, is encouraging but unconvinced.

With self-deprecating wit and a disarming frankness, The Know-It-All recounts the unexpected and comically disruptive effects Operation Encyclopedia has on every part of Jacobs''s life -- from his newly minted marriage to his complicated relationship with his father and the rest of his charmingly eccentric New York family to his day job as an editor at Esquire. Jacobs''s project tests the outer limits of his stamina and forces him to explore the real meaning of intelligence as he endeavors to join Mensa, win a spot on Jeopardy!, and absorb 33,000 pages of learning. On his journey he stumbles upon some of the strangest, funniest, and most profound facts about every topic under the sun, all while battling fatigue, ridicule, and the paralyzing fear that attends his first real-life responsibility -- the impending birth of his first child.

The Know-It-All is an ingenious, mightily entertaining memoir of one man''s intellect, neuroses, and obsessions, and a struggle between the all-consuming quest for factual knowledge and the undeniable gift of hard-won wisdom.

I can relate with A.J.'s feelings about intelligence. Worrying that you're not smart enough, wanting to devour as much knowledge as possible. I think most, if not all of us, have been there at some point. So it was nice to read a book about an ordinary guy going through this, and his journey was fun to follow. This book is not only full of cool facts (I wish I remembered more of them), but it's witty too. My favourite fact? Probably the one about the retro-active declaration of war. Which war, you ask? Well, you'll have to read the book to find out.

Jacobs does a wonderful job of blending his educational quest and acquired knowledge, with his personal life and its present challenges. I loved learning new trivia bits without feeling like I was sitting in a college lecture, and watching how his journey wove itself into his daily life as he shares it with friends and family. It was an easy and fast-paced read, and I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a rewarding and enriching read. Jacobs is a humourous writer, and there was never a passage or chapter where my attention wandered. I think the two aspects I loved most about this book were the idea of somebody creating his own self-project, without any real monetary incentive or reward- it was just something he wanted to do for himself, and the idea of renewing a love of learning and absorbing the world around you. I walked away from this book with a heightened appreciation for the non-stop learning of life... and encyclopedias, of course.

This book, the first by AJ Jacobs will draw out your inner student. There are thousands of things to learn as we follow AJ on his journey through the Encyclopedia from A to Z. He spices it up with a few anecdotes of his personal life, adding just enough excitement to keep this book not from boring us to sleep.

What a fantastic find! I read this book on loan from the Toronto Public Library and now I'm here to purchase it - it's that good! If only schools could figure out a way to make learning this fun all the time. A.J. Jacobs makes reading the encyclopedia interesting and funny and he reveals a great deal about himself along the way. If you enjoy Dave Eggers or any other self-reflexive material, you will love this book.
