From the Publisher

On the afternoon of October 12, 1990, my twin brother, Thomas, entered the Three Rivers, Connecticut, public library, retreated to one of the rear study carrels, and prayed to God the sacrifice he was about to commit would be deemed acceptable. . . .

One of the most acclaimed novels of our time, Wally Lamb's I Know This Much Is True is a story of alienation and connection, devastation and renewal, at once joyous, heartbreaking, poignant, mystical, and powerfully, profoundly human.

About the Author

The author of the number one New York Times bestsellers She's Come Undone and I Know This Much Is True, Wally Lamb still contributes time as a volunteer facilitator at the York Correctional Institution. He lives in Connecticut with his wife, Christine. His third novel is The Hour I First Believed.

    Worth reading 5

I bought this book ages ago, and put it on my pile of "obligatory reading". You know, the books you think you should read, but don't ever actually get around to. But when I started reading it, I found it impossible to put down. This book touched me in ways I never expected, and made me so much more aware of the challenges of mental illness, and the humanity of it as well. It is "obligatory reading", and I say that with great respect. Everyone needs to read this book, and understand the… read more

Could not put it down 4

I picked up this book on a whim, and I was really glad that I did. The characters were so well-developed that you could feel whether you liked or hated them as you went along. I thought it was interesting considering that some people expect identical twins to be the same in all aspects of their lives, and yet in this book, they couldn't be more different. I love the way that the author told the story - so rich with detail. I have read this twice but would love to read it again.

    Captivating, Poignant, Unforgettable... 5

At first daunted by the sheer size of this book, I was intrigued by the comments of so many others. We'll I'm here to say it was as good and even better! Mr Lamb you have done it again. Grabs you from the very first sentence and doesn't let go until the last. A cast of characters that will remain with you forever and a rich tale with many layers very beautifully told. A must read for everyone.

A disappointment held up to high expectations 3

This review is from: I Know This Much Is True (Audio Book (Cassette))

I decided to go easy on this book. I had extremely high expectations. I had read She's Come Undone and I thought that it was one of the best books I'd ever read. I guess that's why I expected so much more from this book than it was. I found I was very bored. I thought it would get better after the first 100 pages or so but it just kept getting worse. If Wally Lamb's next book is this bad, I might just suspect he was really lucky with She's Come Undone and that it was a fluke that isn't going to… read more

    Not a story...a Journey! 5

This review is from: I Know This Much Is True (Trade Paperback)

I am an avid reader, I could read a book a day if time was a luxury I could afford. I have read thousands of books in my lifetime. This book was the most amazing of them all. Wally Lamb's ability to enthrall the reader was like no other - I did not put this book down until I finished it. (Well I used the facilities a couple of times, but you know what I mean) This book simply put is about a twin brother who is coping or trying to cope with the mental illness of his twin brother. He… read more

After reading She's Come Undone I was Eager to read another book by Wally Lamb. I went out and bought I Know This Much Is True and The Hour I First Believed hoping that I'd have hours of entertaining reading ahead of me. In the end I found both books so dreadfully boring I just gave up reading them. The story line is interesting but the author doesn't know how to omit useless boring information.

Wally Lamb is now my favorite author. Specifically, I loved 'I Know This Much Is True'. I absolutely could not put this book down. I love large, long books that take a good amount of time to read. I loved the characters so much I didn't want the story to end!! I would definetly recommend this wonderful novel.

I work in a library, and love to read. I read She's Come Undone and enjoyed it, so when co-workers suggested I read I know This Much is True, I ran out and bought the book without even knowing what it was about. I have to say it was one of the best books I have read in a long time. It is a book which can be emotionally draining but in the end it is worth it all. You discover the characters as Dominick discovers himself and his family. If you haven't read Wally Lamb take a risk and buy it, you… read more

Wow...simply stunning book. Couldn't put it down. 5

This review is from: I Know This Much Is True (Trade Paperback)

This has to be hands down my all time favourite book. At the age of 16, reading is one of my favourite things to do, and although I am still young, I know this book will always keep me coming back for another read through. I loved the characters. You become so attached to them. I would recommend this book to anyone. 10 out of 10. I have read this book three times now and I think it's safe to say Wally Lamb definitely surpasses Dan Brown and Stephen King as my favourite author.

How anyone can say this book was 'too long' and they had to 'push themselves to read through it' is beyond me! Don't let this almost 900 pages scare you, this is truly a great book. I could not put it down! I would promise my 'only one more chapter' and then I would just have to read onto the next to find out what happened. This book had me from the first page to the last. It is a touching story that touches on so many subjects. Everyone should read this book!

although i think this may be the longest book i have ever read, i found it to be wonderful. i am currently studying to be a psychiatric nurse and found this book to be interesting and clear. I felt that it protrayed the experience of a family experiencing mental illness quite well. Overall, this book really kept my attention and was very well written. I surely recommend it.

Like others, I kept pushing myself to keep reading even though the book was failing to capture my attention. I kept telling myself that it would pick up. If the author condensed that story into half the size, it could have been better. I didn't hate it, but it will never make my top 10 list. I'm just proud of myself that I actually finished it. I found the Domenico's memoirs much more interesting than the adventures of the "Birdseed" twins.
