by Wally Lamb

HARPERCOLLINS PUBLISHERS | May 21, 1998 | Audio Book (Cassette)

Oprah's latest book club selection!

New York Times Best Seller

At 40, Dominick Birdsey's entire life has been compromised and constricted by anger and fear: by the schizophrenic twin brother he both deeply loves and resents, and by the past they shared with their adoptive father, Ray, a spit-and polish ex-Navy man and their long-suffering mother, Concettina, a timid, self-conscious woman.

Born in the waning moments of 1949 and the opening minutes of 1950, the boys are physical mirror images who grow into separate yet connected entities. But Dominick's talent for survival his escape from Ray's wrath and the genetic fate that is Thomas will be put to the ultimate test when Thomas, a Bible-spouting zealot, commits an unthinkable act that threatens the tenuous balance of both his and Dominick's lives.

Set against the vivid panoply of twentieth century America and filled with richly drawn, memorable characters, this deeply moving and thoroughly satisfying story brings to light humanity's deepest needs and fears, of our aloneness, our desire for love and acceptance, and our struggle to survive at all costs. Joyous, mystical, and exquisitely written, I Know This Much Is True is an extraordinary audio experience that will leave no listener untouched.

    Could Not Put This Down

This novel is huge but definitely worth it..
Domenic & Thomas are identical twins, except one has schizophrenia. We are introduced to them as adults in 1990 and through flashbacks relive their childhood lives with them. So many issues are addressed in this novel. The family dynamic , sibling rivalry, mental illness, friendship, love, loyalty, the state of the medical system and so much more I cannot even describe.
The characters are very interesting, bringing many sidelines to an already captivating story. This is extremely well written and will hold you hostage from the very first line.
I was not too fond of the ending, those of you that have read it will know everything was tied up too perfectly , but that said I still give it 5 stars .It is still very good,
If you are going to read one book this year make it this one.

I picked up this book on a whim, and I was really glad that I did. The characters were so well-developed that you could feel whether you liked or hated them as you went along. I thought it was interesting considering that some people expect identical twins to be the same in all aspects of their lives, and yet in this book, they couldn't be more different. I love the way that the author told the story - so rich with detail. I have read this twice but would love to read it again.

From Our Editors

It's probably one of the most eagerly anticipated novels of 1998 - Wally Lamb's I Know This Much is True. A modern retelling of an ancient Hindu myth, it begins as America staggers toward the millennium, questioning the past hustle-and-bustle century and the ways that the past affects a family. Dominick Birdsey wholeheartedly tries to deal with his twin brother Thomas, a paranoid schizophrenic, his bullying stepfather Ray and his long-suffering mother. Lamb is the best-selling author of She's Come Undone.
