Kushiel's Dart

by Jacqueline Carey

Tom Doherty Associates | March 15, 2002 | Mass Market Paperbound

The land of Terre d''Ange is a place of unsurpassing beauty and grace. It is said that angels found the land and saw it was good...and the ensuing race that rose from the seed of angels and men live by one simple rule: Love as thou wilt.

Phèdre nó Delaunay is a young woman who was born with a scarlet mote in her left eye. Sold into indentured servitude as a child, her bond is purchased by Anafiel Delaunay, a nobleman with very a special mission...and the first one to recognize who and what she is: one pricked by Kushiel''s Dart, chosen to forever experience pain and pleasure as one.

Phèdre is trained equally in the courtly arts and the talents of the bedchamber, but, above all, the ability to observe, remember, and analyze. Almost as talented a spy as she is courtesan, Phèdre stumbles upon a plot that threatens the very foundations of her homeland. Treachery sets her on her path; love and honor goad her further. And in the doing, it will take her to the edge of despair...and beyond. Hateful friend, loving enemy, beloved assassin; they can all wear the same glittering mask in this world, and Phèdre will get but one chance to save all that she holds dear.

Set in a world of cunning poets, deadly courtiers, heroic traitors, and a truly Machiavellian villainess, this is a novel of grandeur, luxuriance, sacrifice, betrayal, and deeply laid conspiracies. Not since Dune has there been an epic on the scale of Kushiel''s Dart-a massive tale about the violent death of an old age, and the birth of a new.

I first picked up this book because it was recommended by another author I enjoy and I've reread the entire Kushiel's Legacy series many times since then.
Carey makes you care about what happens to her characters right from the start. It does take a little while for the book to get REALLY interesting, but then you're hooked.
Carey's based the story in what would be medieval Europe. The locations are recognizable, but she's changed enough on her map that it seems ok for her to make generalizations and stereotypes about some of her characters without offending.
There is obviously an erotic undertone to the book considering that the lead character is a courtesan. I had no problem with this, but if you're really opposed to a bit of S&M, this may not be the book for you. That said, she does a fine job of fitting the erotic scenes into the rest of the narrative and those scenes become necessary to understanding Phedre's motivations, instead of just some sleaze that's been thrown in.

I discovered my own strange nature all over again through reading of this spiritually erotic adventure. I emphazised with this character, as if I was the one living this story as Phedre no Delauney.... it had my heart pumping and my soul wanting more... I just started reading her second book in this series, Kushiels chosen, and it reads promising.

When I picked this book up and started reading I thought I had stepped through a doorway. This is a powerfully written and spellbinding story. I couldn't put it down until I had finished it. I can hardly wait for Carey to finish to next part of Phedre's story.

From the Critics

"A very sophisticated fantasy, intricately plotted and a fascinating read."--Robert Jordan

"This brilliant and daring debut catapults Carey immediately into the top rank of fantasy novelists . . . . At the end, the heroine reminds one of an equally strong-minded sister whose home was Tara."-Publishers Weekly (starred review)
