Last Canadian Beer: The Moosehead Story

Last Canadian Beer: The Moosehead Story

by HARVEY SAWLER

Nimbus Publishing | August 27, 2010 | Hardcover

Moosehead Breweries and its long-time owner, the Oland family, is the last of the independent Canadian beer companies. From the moment in 1867 when family matriarch Susannah Oland began brewing beer in her Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, backyard, the Oland name has been synonymous with Maritime beer and, perhaps more importantly, successful family business. Last Canadian Beer is the story of the Oland family''s long tenure running one of Canada''s most popular breweries in the face of increasing pressure from international brew giants. While other beer brands have sold out to American and European interests, Moosehead has remained fiercely independent. The author sets out to answer three primary questions: Who are the Olands?; What has made them successful?; and How will the Olands continue to keep Moosehead as an independently owned family business?

This is a wonderful look into the family and traditions behind Moosehead, Canada's last major independent Canadian-owned brewery.

Sawler explores the origins of the company, the many struggles over the years, and how Moosehead's leaders managed to follow family tradition and keep from selling out to the multi-nationals that swallowed up the other large Canadian breweries over the years.

I've long been a fan of Moosehead beer, but gaining further insight into the remarkable family behind this small yet powerful brand makes me that much prouder to spend my beer money on this Canadian family-owned East Coast product that symbolizes so much about Canada's spirit, strength, integrity and majesty.

While not touted as a business book, business owners would benefit from the simple yet effective example of excellence and determination that six generations of the Oland family have committed to keeping their heads held high, focusing on their time-honoured business and products and never losing sight of the little things.
