The Last Light of the Sun

by Guy Kay, Guy Gavriel Kay

February 6, 2004 | Hardcover

There is nothing soft or silken about the north. The lives of men and women are as challenging as the climate and lands in which they dwell. For generations, the Erlings of Vinmark have taken their dragon-prowed ships across the seas, raiding the lands of the Cyngael and Anglcyn peoples, leaving fire and death behind. But times change, even in the north, and in a tale woven with consummate artistry, people of all three cultures find the threads of their lives unexpectedly brought together...

Bern Thorkellson, punished for his father's sins, commits an act of vengeance and desperation that brings him face-to-face, across the sea, with a past he's been trying to leave behind.

In the Anglcyn lands of King Aeldred, the shrewd king, battling inner demons all the while, shores up his defenses with alliances and diplomacy-and with swords and arrows-while his exceptional, unpredictable sons and daughters pursue their own desires when battle comes and darkness falls in the woods.

And in the valleys and shrouded hills of the Cyngael, whose voices carry music even as they feud and raid amongst each other, violence and love become deeply interwoven when the dragon ships come and Alun ab Owyn, chasing an enemy in the night, glimpses strange lights gleaming above forest pools.

Making brilliant use of saga, song and chronicle, Kay brings to life an unforgettable world balanced on the knife-edge of change in The Last Light of the Sun.

Kay tackles what is (imo) the coolest of the warrior archetypes (sorry samurai, you are number 2 lol) VIKINGS!!!!!

They story mostly follows the exploits of Bern Thorkellson, a young "Erling" (Viking) as he travels through the exotic Cyngael and Anglecyn (Welsh and Anglo-Saxons) and as he grows up away from his home and family.

Without giving away any major plot lines, the story flows well and the prose and attention to detail are what characterize Kay as a master story-teller. As with many of Kay's novels, this is very subtle fantasy, full of myths and legends.
There is always so much more to all of Kay's books, and this one is no exception. How he manages to interconnect all the themes of growing up, living in a big shadow, finding your own path, sacrifice, dedication, love of family…..it's what puts Kay above most of his peers.

I agree with the reviewer, who mentioned Arthurian style, this is along those lines. The book leaves you with both a sense of completion and emptiness, truly a gifted author!

In this book Kay brings to life a world and people long gone: the Vikings, the Anglo-Saxons and the Welsh. I love how the three nations were portrayed and the characterization of the individuals was superb. The plot was intricate without unnecessary entanglements. The writing style is that of a truly gifted writer. The world in which the story takes place is rough and life is hard. Kay never falters from staying true to that. I enjoyed this book and will be looking for more of his work. The extensive research is evident without bogging down the plot. The characters are really the pillars here; they are rich, and complex and utterly realistic. The reason for no 5 stars is the choppiness in the flow. There are “rough edges” in the reading of this book. Perhaps this was intentional but for me it was at times jarring.

For those who enjoy Arthurian legends, this is a must read. It's not your typical Arthurian story but is very remeniscent of the legend.

I am an amateur writer myself, and this is one of those books which, after I read the last line and put it down, make me say to myself....

$%#@. I could NEVER write anything half so good.

This book made me laugh out loud. It made me cry (many times). It gave me the shivers. It's the first book by GGK I've read, and now I will be buying all of his other books. Even if they are half as good as this one was, it will be worth my money.

What did I like so much about it? Well, for one, it's complex. This is no simple battle of good and evil, but a complicated weaving of individual's life stories into a greater story. There are no bad buys or good guys, but just people, trying to live their lives, trying to survive. And I loved the way he shows how small things can create larger chains of events, how you never know where your life will end up. In this I feel the book is true to life, because personally I don't believe in destiny. I think we all have the power to make change in our own lives, and the characters in the book do that.

I also liked the setting. Kay renames the Vikings, Welsh and Saxons, and makes them his own, but it's obvious that he's talking about northern Europe in the Viking age, a time and place which I find fascinating.

The characters are wonderful. So many likeable people. You can't help but care what happens to them. Especially the women, which Kay seems to feel a special sympathy for as women in this time period were not allowed into the spheres of life which men enjoyed. They were forced to sit back and let the men fight the wars...even those women who wanted to wield a sword themselves.

Lastly, although the book is filled with darkness, both literal and figurative, I will say that the ending was happy, truly happy. Which is what really makes a book satisfying for me--to reach the end and discover that all is as it should be.

Well, can you tell I like the book yet? The Last Light of the Sun will definitely be in my top ten list. Actually, my top five. And I've read a lot of books! Read it yourself and you'll know why. :)
