Left Neglected

by Lisa Genova

Gallery Books | January 4, 2011 | Hardcover

Sarah Nickerson is like any other career-driven supermom in Welmont, the affluent Boston suburb where she leads a hectic but charmed life with her husband Bob, faithful nanny, and three children-Lucy, Charlie, and nine-month-old Linus.

Between recruiting the best and brightest minds as the vice president of human resources at Berkley Consulting; shuttling the kids to soccer, day care, and piano lessons; convincing her son's teacher that he may not, in fact, have ADD; and making it home in time for dinner, it's a wonder this over-scheduled, over-achieving Harvard graduate has time to breathe.

A self-confessed balloon about to burst, Sarah miraculously manages every minute of her life like an air traffic controller. Until one fateful day, while driving to work and trying to make a phone call, she looks away from the road for one second too long. In the blink of an eye, all the rapidly moving parts of her jam-packed life come to a screeching halt.

A traumatic brain injury completely erases the left side of her world, and for once, Sarah relinquishes control to those around her, including her formerly absent mother. Without the ability to even floss her own teeth, she struggles to find answers about her past and her uncertain future.

Now, as she wills herself to regain her independence and heal, Sarah must learn that her real destiny-her new, true life-may in fact lie far from the world of conference calls and spreadsheets. And that a happiness and peace greater than all the success in the world is close within reach, if only she slows down long enough to notice.

    Truly an amazing book!

I got this book because the main focus was on a disorder I had studied in my psychology class, Left Neglect, and was interested to see if someone could actually make a go of it. I was blown out of the water after reading this book! The characters were so real, the story didn't have a fair tail ending in which magically everything was better again and by the end of the book I was so attached to the main character, Sarah. I could not put this book down and finished it in a week. An amazing book and I can't wait to read Lisa Genova's other books!!

I enjoyed reading this book. I thought that the plot would have been way more disheartening but it truly wasn't a depressing, down in the dumps novel. I found myself laughing during parts and I enjoyed the courage and strength of the characters.

I found myself so engrossed in the lives of the family and was so interested in learning about left neglect. Not knowing what left neglect was, or even having heard of the condition before, I was so interested in developing an understanding of the condition. After reading Lisa Genova's exaplaination, description and depiction of left neglect I feel more educated and informed. I enjoy books that I can enjoy and learn from.

I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoyed Still Alice, or anyone looking for a smart and satisfying read.

I found the start to be kind of a drag. Wasn't until basically the accident for me to actually start getting into the book. I was actually about to say forget it and stop reading. only reason why i didnt was because i had bought the book so i figured i should give it a full try. After the start it was pretty good. I may have not be absolutely in love with it like many of the others on here but that might be the fact this is not usually the type i read. I did give it to my mother in law in the hopes that it would be a reality check for her to stop txting while driving.

    ***MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS***

I LOVED this book. It was something so different from what I normally read and it really turned me onto Lisa Genova. She is an amazing writer-very thorough with her research, and she writes great, believable characters.

This is a story of a woman, Sarah, who gets a brain injury after a car accident. The injury causes her to "lose" awareness of her left side. Having been a busybody before the accident, Sarah must learn to retrain her brain and learn to focus on the people and things that matter most.

I can't praise this book enough. It really makes you think. Just recently, in Alberta, cell phone usage was banned in cars. A lot of people were (and still are) upset. After reading this book, it really turned my thoughts to what could really happen when an accident happens after you were doing something you thought was so innocent while behind the wheel. The thought alone of what kind of damage can be done makes me be so much more cautious while driving. Sure, some people can brush it off and say, "Oh well, maybe a few broken bones?" But what about a broken brain?

Left Neglected really makes a person think. How often do we walk into a room and not really pay attention to what's there. How often do we not pay attention to ourselves? When you think that you've "seen it all," have you really?

While it might sound like a simple subject for a novel, with not very many places to go, Lisa Genova proves you wrong. I've also read Still Alice, by Genova, and it's the same as Left Neglected-both books really show the reader what the condition is like. Genova doesn't glaze over the details, she puts you right in there, empathizing with the main character. In the end, you can't help but rethink how you're going about your days and what you might be able to do differently.

I highly recommend this book. Genova's dedication to research and her detailed writing (without being too detailed) is inspiring. I look forward to reading more from this author.

This book was amazing. I can't believe how well Genova can write about a situation that she hasn't actually experienced herself. I laughed and cried, and couldn't put it down. For anyone who enjoyed "Still Alice" - you will certainly enjoy this one. Amazing.

Another fantastic novel from this author. Still Alice was great. And this is a wonderful follow up. Its your basic storyline: busy supermom, tragic accident, brain injury, road to recovery. But this story is told in an engaging and quick witted way ~ every character is a joy. Wouldn't we all love to have someone as devoted as Bob (the husband) in our lives! You sympathize with Sarah, and her injury, but you never pity her. I learned alot about a brain injury I'd never heard of, and I learned it in a book that I couldn't put down and devoured in 2 days. I love the message in this book: Live more, with less. Enjoy!

When I read the title, I thought someone was neglected in some ways. However, I discovered this medical condition throughout the main character and I couldn't believe it. Even though the topic is somewhat depressing - a very successful woman who has to put her life on hold after an accident - Lisa Genova turns the whole situation in a positive light. I couldn't help but agree that we often forget to live because of our job. What does it mean to really live your life?

At first I wasn't sure about this book simply because of the first few pages but after I found myself entering the pages of the book it was like a saw what happened to the characters. It was only then I knew I wasn't about to return this amazing book as there was no way I could put it down.

An excellent read! Though a work of fiction, Lisa Genova addresses several important issues: work-life balance; identifyingwith work to the detriment of one's own identity; the fragility of the brain as well as its ability to heal; and, the importance of the love of family. It's one of those books that I will read again as a reminder to myself of what is truly important in life.

I absolutely LOVED this book. Another novel from Lisa Genova that I could not put down and left me wanting more. I love her novels and can't wait for the next one. If you liked "Still Alice" you will love "Left Neglected". Great Book!!!

I discovered Lisa Genova with her first novel, Still Alice. When I saw Left Neglected, I knew I had to pick it up to see if it lived up to the wonderful experience I had with Still Alice.

While I didn't LOVE it as much as Still Alice (which was very special to me for familial reasons), Left Neglected was still a very, very, very good book. There was less action but it was still very relatable, wether you are familiar with the Neglect condition or not. I think most people today, including me, can relate to Sarah's fast paced lifestyle before her accident. When something happens, you HAVE to slow it down, and this book shows you just how important that is - to spend time on you, on your family and on getting better.

While this wasn't the best book in the world, it didn't disappoint at all and I liked it a lot. If Lisa Genova continues to write such well crafted stories (with medical twists, which I love), she might end up just as big as other authors like Jodi Picoult, whose style I find very similar.

I really enjoyed this book. Shows you how fragile life is and how things can change in an instant redirecting your life plan to create a 'new normal'. Determination and acceptance being the key to being happy in your new self.

Imagine, you are highly successful woman, juggling family and a very demanding career..then it all comes to a sudden halt after a horrible car accident.
This novel, tells the journey of Sarah Nickerson, before and after her accident which has left her with a brain injury known as "left neglect".
Since I had never heard of this injury before, I found it extremely
educational as well as inspiring. Lisa Genova takes us into Sarah's life where we watch the obstacles she faces every day and the enlightenment she sees as her new life changes, yet brings with it many rewards unforeseen before.
What I love about Lisa Genova's writing,( the same held true in "Still Alice") is that we get to walk around in the skin of the protagonist and really see life as they see it.
    Excellent story telling.

    Annoying, disappointing

I was interested in this book's premise, about a wife and mother who suffers a brain injury after attempting to use her cellphone while driving. Instead, I was annoyed by the main character's denial of her situation. Despite her injury, her mind continued to race a mile a minute. I found that someone in her situation should have been far more grateful for the small miracles in life, such as the ability to remember your husband, your children, and that you weren't far more injured or maimed. I was really annoyed by her self-pity, her inability to slow down. Her mental soliloquies about her OCD, control freak-type behaviour was enough to make my head spin. Also, the brand-name-dropping didn't serve any purpose - who cares that she totaled her Acura? That she wore a Cartier watch? That she had expensive silk blouses from Cole Haan? Who cares? She's successful, we get it. She was so bitter about her situation - and perhaps rightfully so - but she didn't do herself any favours. It wasn't until page 166 that she started to step out of this denial.

    Comments on this review:
    Leslie Evans

Sadly I think you have missed the whole "reality" of the situation in this novel and how Sarah HAS to cope with the changes inflicted on her from the accident - which happened because, like so many other successful women, she was trying to burn the candles at both ends while trying to beat through the glass ceiling so very often imposed on executive females. I think it was meant to be more of a reality check for the reader than for the character.

    Chrissy Cee

Thanks, but I disagree. I think that the character needed the reality check more than the reader. From the time the accident happened, I found myself wondering how I would react and what I would do. I didn't think she was realistic at all. I think that anyone in her situation would come to terms with the fact that they had to slow down. While it is to her credit that she wanted to keep going, she didn't do herself any favours by denying the fact that she couldn't.

    hope

The thing is- when you have a brain injury you cant understand simple things that you and I can grasp. It would be similar to me saying that someone with Alzheimer's should remember things. I know its difficult to fully understand what someone is experiencing when we're not in their mind and body. But this in itself is something to be grateful for- that we have the capability to be grateful.

This one came in close second to Still Alice (ranks high in my top 10). I could identify in some areas with this character, as far as trying to multitask when I should be paying attention to the road. The character also becomes reunited with her mother, and I found that very touching. What I love about Lisa's writing is that I feel I am being educated as well as being entertained. Excellent!!

I was really looking forward to this book after reading Still Alice, and although it didn't disappoint for some reason I found that I was having to push myself to keep reading it. Although, with that said I did read it in a couple hours and really did enjoy it.

I love how her books humanize brain injuries and a book like this one really shows how it can happen to anyone at anytime. This is defintely a book that I would recommend to anyone.

This book is a sensitive account of a high powered woman with 80 hour work week, three children,a husband and a big home who tries to multitask ..drive and talk on her cell resulting in a horrific accident that turns her world upside down.Unable to work, dependant of others she knows her life won't be the same therefore she reexamines her life and priorities. Genova tells Sarah's story so that we learn about this interesting left neglect condition. This book really makes you think about what life is really all about and don't take life for granted. This story flowed as easy as my tears...heart breaking but so real. I loved it.
