Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust

by Immaculee Ilibagiza

Hay House | February 10, 2006 | Trade Paperback

Immaculee Ilibagiza grew up in a country she loved, surrounded by a family she cherished. But in 1994 her world was ripped apart as Rwanda descended into bloody genocide. Immaculee''s family was brutally murdered in a killing spree that lasted three months and claimed the lives of nearly a million Rwandans. Incredibly, Immaculee survived the slaughter. For 91 days, she and seven other women huddled together in a local pastor''s cramped bathroom while hundreds of machete-wielding killers hunted them. It was during those endless hours of unspeakable terror that Immaculee discovered the power of prayer, eventually shedding her fear of death and forging a profound and lasting relationship with God. She emerged from her hideout having discovered the meaning of truly unconditional love-a love so strong she was able to seek out and forgive her family''s killers. This remarkable young woman''s triumphant story of her journey through the darkness of genocide will inspire anyone whose life has been touched by fear, suffering and loss.

I wanted to learn more about the genocide, and when I found this book, I realized that it was much more. I don't know how we hurt each other like this. If Immaculée can forgive, then the things life has thrown at me are nothing.

I don't think I've ever cried so much while reading a book. It just tore my heart to pieces. Makes you think about how cruel human beings are to each other just because of a little difference. Immaculee truly is an inspiration. I would recommend this book to anyone, anytime.

"Left to Tell" by Immaculee Ilibagiza is a truly magnificent book. This story looks deep into the soul of humankind, and makes the reader realize just how beautiful and fragile life really is. I was in absolute awe of how anyone could not only survive this horrible holocaust, but survive it with a faith so strong that it would enable you to forgive. "Left to Tell" brought me to tears and made me realize how incredibly blessed I am. I would recommend this book (and DO recommend this book) to everyone and anyone I meet. Immaculee is a woman of such courage and compassion – once you pick up this book I can guarantee you will not be able to put it down.
