The Leisure Economy: How Changing Demographics, Economics, And Generational Attitudes Will Reshape Our Lives And Our Ind

by Linda Nazareth

John Wiley & Sons | October 3, 2007 | Hardcover

For the past three decades, we have been steadily creating an extreme ''time-crunch economy'' that has affected jobs, portfolios, businesses and lives. But the ''time-crunch economy'' is turning into ''the leisure economy'' and it will mean wrenching adjustments for our lives and institutions. Everyone from consumers, investors, businesses, and policy-makers will need to understand the changes afoot.

The Leisure Economy posits profound economic changes in North America due to both the retirement of the baby boomers and the attitudes of ascendant generations X and Y. Looking at trends in demographics, economics and generational change, this book looks at how to stay ahead of the leisure economy and predicts who will be the winners and losers in the seismic shift ahead.

    Total trash

    Kenrick Chin

When this book first appeared I was tempted to buy it. I was so happy to find a copy in the local library because now I am glad that I did not waste my money on such trash and drivel. The author is so caught up in her own worldly hell of a hole and is so blinded that she cannot see outside of the box. Isn't this what we called the "rat race"? It reminds me of religious fanatics who are so blinded by their faith that they cannot see the true light. She has been completely brainwashed by typical western market economy, capitalism and consumerism. If this represents mainstream thinking of economists today it is no wonder the economy is in such a mess and the outlook for society is so frightening.

This book is a great follow up for anyone who has read any of the "Boomer-fallout" books. The stats and arguments are well presented, but the author seems to try almost too hard to make them palatable. The quotes from what seems to be an endless stream of self-absorbed former yuppies are tiresome, and distract from an otherwise fine product.

This is a great "pop economics" book that puts a lot of complicated concepts into a straightforward format that is easy for any layperson.

I first picked it up thinking it was "chicklit" from the funky cover (anything with pink flip flops on the cover automatically catches my eye!), but was pleasantly surprised at the depth of the subject matter, that the author has obviously well researched. I felt I saw myself in some of the case studies!

All in all a great read!
