From the Publisher

Winifred Rudge, a bemused writer struggling to get beyond the runaway success of her mass-market astrology book, travels to London to jump-start her new novel about a woman who is being haunted by the ghost of Jack the Ripper. Upon her arrival, she finds that her stepcousin and old friend John Comestor has disappeared, and a ghostly presence seems to have taken over his home. Is the spirit Winnie's great-great-grandfather, who, family legend claims, was Charles Dickens's childhood inspiration for Ebenezer Scrooge? Could it be the ghostly remains of Jack the Ripper? Or a phantasm derived from a more arcane and insidious origin? Winnie begins to investigate and finds herself the unwilling audience for a drama of specters and shades-some from her family's peculiar history and some from her own unvanquished past.

In the spirit of A. S. Byatt's Possession, with dark echoing overtones of A Christmas Carol, Lost presents a rich fictional world that will enrapture its readers.

About the Author

“[A] bewitching story...Witty and wise…Adult and sophisticated, his musings on beauty, ugliness, magic, reality, and imagination explore how our past follows us always and shapes our self-perception.” (Chicago Tribune on Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister)

    Disappointing 1

I don't know if it's because I expected something different or if I genuinely disliked this book, but if you're expecting a typical Gregory Maguire novel, revise your expectations. This book is a dark, psychological muddle.

Maguire does Jack the Ripper 3

This book is not Maguire at his best. It is the story of a woman who becomes obsessed with Jack the Ripper. Rather than focusing on one story which he rewrites, as in Wicked, Maguire's strength in this novel is the character development. It is a gripping tale that will reward a discerning reader.

He could have done better 1

I am a huge fan of Macguire, but this book disappointed me, too many elements ruined what could have been an amazing story. He seemed confused about what plot he was going to follow. I adored it for the first bit but hated the ending. It was to out of the blue and not following the story he seemed to be presenting in the first half of the novel. If you are looking for great maguire, check out wicked and confessions, that is him at his best. read more

Another amazing book written by Gregory Maguire. He created an odd world in which a women finds herself lost in a mystery, but lost in her past. As she uncovers the mystery that surrouds her she discovers that she needs to escape the life she lives. The only problem is, how can she? read more
