Louder Than Words: A Mother's Journey In Healing Autism

by Jenny Mccarthy

Penguin Group USA, Inc | August 1, 2008 | Trade Paperback

The New York Times bestseller that is an inspiring ?story of hope? (People) for parents of autistic children

One morning Jenny McCarthy was having a cup of coffee when she sensed something was wrong. She ran into her two-year-old son Evan?s room and found him having a seizure. Doctor after doctor misdiagnosed Evan until?after many harrowing, life-threatening episodes?one good doctor discovered that Evan is autistic.

With a foreword from Dr. David Feinberg, medical director of the Resnick Neuro-psychiatric Hospital at UCLA, and an introduction by Jerry J. Kartzinel, a top pediatric autism specialist, Louder Than Words follows Jenny as she discovered an intense combination of behavioral therapy, diet, and supplements that became the key to saving Evan from autism. Her story sheds much-needed light on autism through her own heartbreak, struggle, and ultimately hopeful example of how a parent can shape a child?s life and happiness.

    Eye Opening

This book is very uplifting and educating. Even though I do not have children, let alone anyone in my family with Autism, I found this book to be very fascinating. Around 1 in 150 children are diagnosed with Autism these days, and it's only increasing. I got a lot out of reading this book, and I think anyone who reads will too.

    Depressing

After reading this book I felt depressed, although the book does have a "happy" ending. It's really about how "hard" it was for the author to accept her own child with Autism. The way she describes her self reacting and feeling sounds out of control, almost neurotic. I finished the book and though to my self is this what it is like having a child with ASD?? am I going to end up like this: wildly depressed in uncontrollable crying fits yelling at hospital staff?? The answer is NO!! There is hope, treatment, and happiness for parents and children with ASD. A lot of the authors personal experiences are very unrelatable most of us "average" 2 parents at work kind of house holds just don't have the money or connections to get bumped to the front of the line to see "the best" neurologist in the country, average people can't afford to drop work and charter a private plane to fly home because our child is in the hospital. I also had a hard time seeing past all the colorful language, and I mean swear words lots of them. I was given this book shortly after my Son was diagnosis with ASD, the book jacket says "the first book you should read after your child is diagnosed" I would not recommend that. Talk to your child psychologist they can give you a list of far better resources than this one. The one positive thing I will say is there are a few funny antidotes and some very basic helpful info about diet and stuff like that, but be prepared to research on your own if you are interested because there are not many details.

I read this book some time ago, but thought I would start with it.. it's awesome.. once I started, I couldn't stop and put it down.

I learned a lot from this book.. It made me very aware of how strong I needed to be in order to get my son the right people in his life, the right therapies and treatments.

Please, if you have a loved one diagnosed with Autism, I suggest this book.. it will inspire you!!

If I could give this book a rating of "zero" (or less) I would....
I know of so many professionals and families who are both saddened and frustrated with this book. This book makes numerous claims which are absolutely unsubstantiated. Jenny McCarthy is a celebrity - NOT a scientist! I would argue that her book has actually hindered, if not harmed, future research and understanding around ASDs.

    A lot of misconceptions

Jenny McCarthy has a lot of misconceptions about Autism and by using her fame to promote them, she does a disservice to anyone who has or knows someone with Autism.
She actually suggests you not vaccinate your child! How many more instances of diseases that were almost eliminated have there been since parents became too frightened to vaccinate their child? You'd be surprised. But she never mentions that in her book.
Nor does she mention that there is no shred of scientific proof that vaccinations cause or contribute to autism.

    Amazing

Reading about Jenny's experience with autism and vaccines should be recommended to all parents before they vaccinate their children, This book was a page turner that I couldn't put down. Its a touching story about the determination that is required to pull a child "out" of the autism diagnosis. A must read for all !!!

I’ve always thought Jenny McCarthy has a great sense of humour. After reading this book (in one sitting) she shows that she also has a good head on her shoulders. I applaud her persistence in seeing help for her son and am glad that I bought the book as a portion of the proceeds is donated . . . to . . . some organization that helps with autism? ? I don’t have the book with me and I can’t remember specifically were they go.

I've read this book in a few hours, I couldn't put it down. Her experiences as a mom, have been difficult, but she shows how if you stay on focus and keep all of the positives in front you got a best as shot as anyone to help your child. Would definatly recommend as a must for reading.

    Heartbreaking and Empowering

I read this book to learn more about autism and I'm glad I did. I just could not stop reading it. The story is heartbreaking and empowering at the same time. This is a book about love, passion, and faith. A must read for all mothers. It is really hard to see your loved ones suffer and not being able to do much about it. But Jenny showed us how to never give up even if faced with so called incurable diseases. For more reading about other "incurables" and successful ways of treating them I suggest Cure the Incurable.
