Love the One You're With

by Emily Giffin

St. Martin's Press | April 21, 2009 | Trade Paperback

A novel for anyone who has ever wondered: how can I truly love the one I''m with, when I can''t forget the one who got away?

Ellen and Andy Graham have the perfect marriage. There is no question how deep their devotion is, and how naturally they bring out the best in each other. But one fateful afternoon, Ellen runs into Leo. The one who brought out the worst in her. The one who left her heartbroken nearly a decade ago. The one she could never quite forget. When his reappearance ignites long-dormant emotions, Ellen begins to question whether the life she''s living is the one she''s meant to live.

    Great Author

This wasn't as good as "Something Borrowed" or "Something Blue", but nonetheless it was a great read. The best thing about Giffin's novels is that they're quick reads which absorb you completely.

I absolutely adore novels written by Emily Giffin. I couldn't put the book down at all; it's a definite two thumbs up.

This is the 3rd book I read from Giffin. I liked it but it was definitely not the best one so far. The story line is good but I don't think there are too many events in this book. A lot more was happening in Sth Borrowed & Sth Blue. Will be reading Baby Proof next. Hope this one is good too!

    Another Great Read By Giffin

I had heard a lot of bad things about this book; it didn't live up to the hype, it wasn't as good as the first one, it was boring. However, upon reading Love the One You're With, I strongly disagreed with everything I had heard. I love this book. It was a great read, and I related with the character so well that at some points I gasped at what was happening. I did find that it ended too suddenly... but there is rarely a completely perfect book.

This book pretty much brings the idea of true love into the harsh realities of life, be it career, family, or both. But it gives one answer to the question "how can I truly love the one I'm with if I can't forget the one that got away?". The book begins with Ellen's chance encounter with her ex and then begins to tell the story of her past history - her past and present relationships with her ex, parents, sister and best friend as well as her relationship with the man now her husband. As she questions the choices she made in her life, she begins to discover that maybe true love isn't that warm, tingly feeling that makes your heart beat slightly faster, but that true love is making the choice to commit, true love is about family and true love is first and foremost, being true to yourself.

I enjoyed but at the same time I was bothered by this book. I sorta expected the book to be what it was but even knowing that I only read fast because I wanted to be done with it. I probably wouldn't have snagged this book up on my own if I hadn't had to read it for my book club.

The lead female really irked me. I understood where she was coming from but I felt like she threw blame on other people rather than realizing that some of the situations and her feelings were strictly due to her behavior rather than her in-laws. I don't think that they would've loved her less if she had at times spoken her mind. She let things progress too far before realizing she had to change the situation.

As for her ex-lover coming back in her life I think this shows us all a simple rule. Just tell the husband. Had she told Andy originally there never would've been such a huge build up in her mind. Even if she was still working out her reactions/feelings to Leo's return it wouldn't have been so all-consuming, at least in my opinion.

Well written. You must be in the right frame of mind to read this book as it can seem indulgeant and self destructive. It's about a woman's perspective on a former and an existing relationship and the decisions to make about the two men it involves. Chapters are painfully long which can seem to drag on.

I thought that it was alright but it wont stand out in my book collection. kinda predictable, no real climax. I too thought it was going to be good cause I got into it very quickly but it let me down. I thought it was better then baby proof (boring) but no where near something borrowed or something blue (one of my favs) hopefully she comes out with something good soon or I am going to stop buying all her books!

i was super disappointed with this book. the summary of the book on the back seemed so promising. and i even thought the beginning was good because it wasn't one of those books that took FOREVER to get to its conflict but then i kept reading and it just seemed like the book never had a climax at all. it was boring and predictable and i didn't care much for the character. this was my first book by her and definitely my last.

After reading L.A. Candy by Lauren Conrad, i wanted something along those story lines. I was looking for a book i could relate to, and a book that would keep me interested.

This is the first book by Emily Giffin that i have read and i am impressed by her work. The way the book was written was very well put together and i, along with a lot of other women, can relate to this book, the story line, and the character.

NO, i am not married but past relationships can sometimes linger and this book portrayed the story very well.

I am looking forward to reading her other books!

I have read her first book "Something Borrowed" and I thought it was very good. Word of advice read them in order as the characters go from one book into the another.

The foundation of the book had to do with a struggling woman who keeps on thinking about the one who got away. It was set up to be a great perfect chick lit as I think that many women can relate to that. However, the heroine lacked substance and events were highly predictable. Better than baby proof but nowhere near something borrowed/blue.

This was the first Emily Giffin book I read, it was a quick entertaining read. I agree that it was predictable I knew exactly what was going to happen before it did. On the other hand it dealt with a situation more then a few people have been in before. Not great, not horrible.

I enjoyed this book because it feels exciting...I cannot say I have had anyone like Leo "the-one-that-got-away" guy in my life, but I have found myself day dreaming about the closest thing I had to it. Anyways, Emily writes in a way that i enjoy reading it and the story seems to be both far and close to my life. I have begun reccommending it to my other girlfriends who have had trouble puttin git down. I read it in less than a week. I am reading her Something Blue novel now - not as good so far but I still enjoy Emily Giffins writing.

So far this book is my all time favorite, read on the beaches on St Thomas USVI might have had a bit to do with it, but it is a great read. I loved the story line right down to the last page, it really makes you appreciate your relationship and love & value your time together. This book definitely confirms the famous statement that "all things happen for a reason"! I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a great chick lit beach worthy read, it is perfect! Enjoy.

I too was very disappointed by this book. I devoured Something Borrowed and Something Blue, thought Baby Proof was not bad, but this was horrible. It was boring, predictable and felt like it was written half-heartedly and just to get another book out quickly ( a la Danielle Steel). I hope whatever Ms. Giffin comes out with next has a little more effort put into it or I won't be bothering with her novels anymore.

I enjoy her writing style and didn't mind this book but it was her worse by far for me. I loved Something Borrowed & Something Blue and I related to a lot of Baby Proof. This one just didn't connect with me. I wouldn't tell people not to read it, but I won't have anyone rushing out to buy it in hardcover. The main character thinks she is in love with an ex-boyfriend and that maybe she settled for her husband. Meh. Not that interesting really.

Not as good as her previous books, but I really do enjoy how Griffin writes her characters.
