Lucifer's Hammer

by Jerry Pournelle, Larry Niven

Random House Publishing Group | May 12, 1985 | Mass Market Paperbound

The gigantic comet had slammed into Earth, forging earthquakes a thousand times too powerful to measure on the Richter scale, tidal waves thousands of feet high. Cities were turned into oceans; oceans turned into steam. It was the beginning of a new Ice Age and the end of civilization. But for the terrified men and women chance had saved, it was also the dawn of a new struggle for survival--a struggle more dangerous and challenging than any they had ever known....

    One Amazing Book

This book is probably the best I have read in a long time. If you saw Armageddon or Deep Impact and were disappointed by their idealistic attitudes, read this book. It will change the way you feel about the end of the world.

I purchased this book when it was first published and have read it enough times to have it practically worn out. I have enjoyed every reading to date and am now going to buy a new copy. It is an intelligent look at "the end of the world, as we know it." Strong characters; engrossing story.

From Our Editors

The trade paper re-launch of a classic sci-fi bestseller from the authors of the acclaimed alien invasion epic "Football". For millionaire Tim Hamner, the comet he helped discover is a ticket to immortality. For filmmaker Harvey Randall, it's a chance to redeem a flagging career. And for astronauts John Baker and Rick Delanty, it's a second chance for glory in outer space.

About the Author

Niven received his B.A. in mathematics in 1962. During his first year of writing, all he received were rejection slips, but his first novel, World of Ptavvs (1966), was a success and launched his career. Niven has won five Hugos and one Nebula award, testimony that his colleagues in the science fiction world respect his work. Perhaps Niven's most well-known creation is Ringworld, a distant planet that may be taken as a metaphor for Earth, as it was once great but has since fallen into decay.
