Luck in the Shadows: The Nightrunner Series, Book I

by Lynn Flewelling

Random House Publishing Group | August 1, 1996 | Mass Market Paperbound

"A new star is rising in the fantasy firmament...teems with magic and spine-chilling amounts of skullduggery."-Dave Duncan, author of The Great Game

When young Alec of Kerry is taken prisoner for a crime he didn't commit, he is certain that his life is at an end. But one thing he never expected was his cellmate. Spy, rogue, thief, and noble, Seregil of Rhiminee is many things-none of them predictable. And when he offers to take on Alec as his apprentice, things may never be the same for either of them. Soon Alec is traveling roads he never knew existed, toward a war he never suspected was brewing. Before long he and Seregil are embroiled in a sinister plot that runs deeper than either can imagine, and that may cost them far more than their lives if they fail. But fortune is as unpredictable as Alec's new mentor, and this time there just might be…Luck in the Shadows.

Luck in the Shadows turned out to be a stunning disappointment. After reading 300 pages into the novel, I just can't read anymore. The tale lures you in with a quick beginning only to lead you on from there at a just-too-slow-for-comfort pace. 300 pages into an almost 500-page novel, the romance has only been thought about briefly, and the enemy has only been alluded to and never seen. Flewelling throws plot into the wind to prioritize character development which also goes nowhere fast. The story is an airid wasteland which leaves one choking for some sort of interesting character. Seregil, our main character's mentor, is sometimes that character, but is usually just as boring as everyone else.

I feel terrible being so negative about this novel when it is very popular with other gay/lesbian fiction fans. Yet the truth is, I have no idea what anyone saw in it to begin with. Maybe it would have been decent if it was 2 or 300 pages shorter, because the turtle pacing is simply unbearable.

The pacing was actually one of the draws for me - I liked that it wasn't yet another hack-slash-roll-in-the-hay fantasy where you never learned a jot of the world's history or culture. I often find fantasy is too quick, and Flewelling, much like George R.R. Martin, tells a tale rich with detail. But, obviously, to each their own...

A big, disappointing review. That's you, btw. Wow. I really wish I could rate your rating, because I'd give you about a 0.5/5, since it's so painfully obvious you have no idea what you're talking about. You obviously had preconceived notions about the book and the series before you started reading. I'm not sure what it was exactly you were expecting or looking for; from the sound of it, some hot and heavy gay sexcapade or something equally trite. I'm rather horrified to see you're a Chapters employee. I don't know what your usual section is, but I hope it's kids books, as I wouldn't want to have you reviewing anything else.
