From the Publisher

"A new star is rising in the fantasy firmament...teems with magic and spine-chilling amounts of skullduggery."-Dave Duncan, author of The Great Game

When young Alec of Kerry is taken prisoner for a crime he didn't commit, he is certain that his life is at an end. But one thing he never expected was his cellmate. Spy, rogue, thief, and noble, Seregil of Rhiminee is many things-none of them predictable. And when he offers to take on Alec as his apprentice, things may never be the same for either of them. Soon Alec is traveling roads he never knew existed, toward a war he never suspected was brewing. Before long he and Seregil are embroiled in a sinister plot that runs deeper than either can imagine, and that may cost them far more than their lives if they fail. But fortune is as unpredictable as Alec's new mentor, and this time there just might be…Luck in the Shadows.

A Classic Fantasy Tale, With A Romantic Twist 5

There seem to be a whole lot of preconceptions/misconceptions about this book, and about the Nightrunner series in general. So, rather than focus on what this series is, I'm going to try to write about what this series ISN'T. Hopefully this will help clear a few things up. May contain some spoilers. This book is NOT: -A gay fantasy novel. -A fantasy novel about gay people. This book IS: -A book that likes to take traditional gender roles and throw them to the wind. -A classic-style… read more

    A Big Disappointment - thebookblog.ca 1

Luck in the Shadows turned out to be a stunning disappointment. After reading 300 pages into the novel, I just can’t read anymore. The tale lures you in with a quick beginning only to lead you on from there at a just-too-slow-for-comfort pace. 300 pages into an almost 500-page novel, the romance has only been thought about briefly, and the enemy has only been alluded to and never seen. Flewelling throws plot into the wind to prioritize character development which also goes nowhere fast. The… read more

    • The pacing was actually one of the draws for me - I liked that it wasn't yet another hack-slash-roll-in-the-hay fantasy where you never learned a jot of ... read more

Great book with a dash of gay romance 4

Fantasy at its strongest, Flewelling has crafted a world where prophecies hold sway, and society has formed to adapt to this. In a realm where it is foretold that so long as a woman sits the throne, the kingdom will prosper, Flewelling thereafter shows us a society where gender roles are eroding quickly, and that a bit of gay romance doesn't cause much of a stir. I'm all packed - when can I go there? Seriously, though, the plot itself is captivating, and there's a nice slice of humour in the… read more

    Amazing Book! 5

This book had me captivated as soon as I began it. I've read it three times since and still look forward to reading it again. I loved how Lynn uses her characters and really has fun with them. There were many scenes that had me laughing out loud while others, had me nervously biting my nails. A great read!
