Having seen loads of good press for the Kate Daniel's series I decided to hop on board and see what the fuss was about. I like to wait till there are a few books already out before I jump in (George RR Martin made me gun shy). Magic Bites was a fair story. There were a few inconsistencies which made me flip back a ways in the book to verify I hadn't read it wrong. The plot was pretty predictable but I was intrigued by Kate and Curran so I can forgive that. I am very curious about Kate and exactly what she can do magically and by her odd relationship with Curran. It kind of reminds me of my obsession with Barron's and what kind of being he was. I am willing to try out another couple installments and see where Andrew's takes things. The story is from Kate's POV so we don't get to see what is happening with Curran from his perspective. I would not say Magic Bites was on par with Brigg's, whom I tend to hold up as an ideal, but it was an OK start.

I really enjoyed this book. From beginning to end, it had action, humor, and a bit of romance. What I really like about this book is that it’s not really long but every page is interesting – never a dull moment. An awesome start to a series.

Magic Bites is the debut novel from Ilona Andrews in the Kate Daniels series. The scene is set in Atlanta but it is a vastly different place where magic rules & much of what man has created lays in ruins. The population is not limited the weres, witches & vampires but a variety of mythical magical creatures populate this complex world.

Kate the lead female character appears to have great magical power related to her bloodline but that element of the story is not fully disclosed as it relates to the series as a whole. Kate's training has been to keep others at a distance not only to hide her power but to prevent potential harm inflicted by her enemies. That being said she seems to make friendly affiliations in the novel which prove especially helpful in defeating a shared foe. It is very much a subplot but Kate also finds herself attracted to the Curran, the Beast Lord though she would not admit it.

The beginning of this novel sets a complex scene which can make for slow reading but at the same time I would give the author credit for her originality. The characters are engaging & there is just enough unresolved tension to keep you wanting more!!!

I found myself a bit lost at first in this book. There is so much thrown at you in the beginning that I felt I missed a book. What it really is, is Ilona creating a real interesting new world for you, and once you get to meet Curran...It all falls into place, and you end up staying up to 2 in the morning to finish :).
It is action packed, not much romance, but a small touch near the end, which just gets you eager to read the next installment. The humor is what I like. Funny, Tough, and different bad guys....All equals a great start to a new series.
