Magic Study

by Maria V. Snyder

Mira | September 1, 2007 | Trade Paperback

Yelena is a survivor. Kidnapped as a child, held prisoner as a teen, then released to act as a poison taster, she is now a student of magic. But these magic skills place her in imminent danger, and with an execution order on her head, she has no choice but to escape to Sitia, the land of her birth.

But nothing in Sitia is familiar. As she struggles to understand where she belongs and how to control her powers, a rogue magician emerges—and Yelena catches his eye. Suddenly she is embroiled in a situation not of her making. And once again her magical abilities will either save her life...or be her downfall.

    Better Than Book 1

You know your life is bad when you miss your days as a poison taster...

With her greatest enemy dead, and on her way to be reunited with the family she'd been stolen from long ago, Yelena should be pleased. But though she has gained her freedom, she can't help feeling isolated in Sitia. Her Ixian background has changed her in many ways-and her newfound friends and relatives don't think it's for the better.

Despite the turmoil, she's eager to start her magic training-especially as she's been given one year to harness her power or be put to death. But her plans take a radical turn when she becomes involved with a plot to reclaim Ixia's throne for a lost prince-and gets entangled in powerful rivalries with her fellow magicians.

If that wasn't bad enough, it appears her brother would love to see her dead. Luckily, Yelena has some old friends to help her with all her new enemies.

I can see I am having a love, hate relationship with this series. Let me start by saying I liked it alot better than POISON STUDY, but I still had my issues. I was going to give MAGIC STUDY three stars but as I sat staring at the book and realized I fell in love with the characters this time around. And I was more enchanted with the studies of Magic rather than Poisons.
Yelena I found was much better in MAGIC STUDY. In this book she knew what she had to do and did it without the constant should I or shouldn't I. Valek was much more likable, there was alot more romantic moments between Yelena and him, which made a big difference towards the story. And it was so nice that Ari and Janco were with us again, I love them both.
I don't know how I felt about Yelena's new found family...mother Perl, father Esau and brother Leif, I had my like and dislike moments. We are introduced to a dozen new secondary characters, and I have to say they were all interesting and added excitement to the story. Oh yeah, Kiki, Yelena's new horse, she was awesome.
The storyline in book two was much more interesting and kept me reading through to find out what happened next, I am looking forward to FIRE STUDY. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy type books.

I was so happy to read the second installment of this series and it certainly did not disappoint me. In fact, I probably enjoyed it as much as the first book, Poison Study. In this installment, Yelena has come into herself more, able to explore her magical side. I love how strong she is and able to take care of herself, though she grows quite a bit on the emotional level.

Again, I found Snyder's writing to be compelling and I loved the world that she created, this time in Sitia, in many ways the polar opposite to Ixia, the setting of the first book. The jungle scenes were great and I love the idea of a whole community making its home in the treetops. My favorite characters from the first book also return, Ari, Janco, and, of course, Valek.

There are also some great new characters: her family, Moon Man, and especially her horse Kiki who she has a magical connection with. Her parents and Kiki really soften Yelena's character in a nice way, rounding her out. I enjoyed the scenes when Yelena went home - they were well written and heartwrenching. I could just feel the nerveous anxiety of her mother, wanting to make up for all the years of lost time with a daughter who has been damaged and is unprepared for family life. Lief, her brother's, reaction to Yelena was also interesting - he had spent every day out in the jungle looking for her, and when she returns he rejects her. This seems confusing and out of place until we understand his own emotional turmoil.

Everyone, once again, seems to have a reason to distrust Yelena and her very powerful, but strange, magic. She makes great strides at times, then she stumbles and needs to regroup. This is a book full of adventure and tension, with a bad guy who is so creepy that he is difficult even to think about. It is obvious that the more Yelena learns to trust herself and learn about her magic, the better she will become.

The other aspect to the book that I found intersting was the discourse on different forms of government. There is a lot of tension between the military rule in Ixia and the democratic rule in Sitia. The Sitians all defend their government, even though it is cumbersome and slow, valuing their freedoms and it it means that some people starve in the streets. Yelena grew up in Ixia, where everyone has a role. Yes, freedoms are limited, but hard work, no matter where you come from or what your gender, will get you advancement. There is no hunger or material want in Ixia and everyone has a place. Ultimately, neither government comes off as better, but the exporation was fun.

    Great middle to the series

This is the sequel to Poison Study and does the story get even better. Yelena starts her training in magic. This one reminds me of book 2 of Eragon seeing both Yelena and Eragon have to travel to different areas to properly learn how to use their magic. Both stories are very different though.

Yelena meets new characters some that cause her great pain. I mean both emotional pain and physical pain. I really liked this book because we get to know Sitia's political views and how they feel about Ixia. We learn both sides and I for one cannot decide who is in the right and who is in the wrong. Both Ixia and Sitia have things I like/dislike about there political systems.

I was glad to see that some of Yelena's friends from Ixia showed up to help her along the way with her dilemmas. I also love Kiki she is hilarious for a horse.

Overall this was a strong middle to the Study series.

Yelena has escaped death, but left her lover behind, and now lives in the South, where magic is allowed, and her gifts might be taught and controlled.

Still, her life is nowhere near the soft calm she had envisioned: her own brother seems to hate her, the other magicians do not trust her, and everyone wonders if she might be a spy for the militaristic regime to the north, from where she came. Snyder has crafted a solid fantasy republic in this second installment of Yelena's life, and the magic is fresh and interesting.

With a murder mystery, political tension, and the headstrong heroine all clashing together into a wonderful snarl, the plot keeps a decent pace and leaves you smiling at Yelena's solutions. Well written - and the third, 'Fire Study,' continues Snyder's trend of fleshing out the world.
