I have to be honest and admit that I initially picked up this book
because I liked the way it looked. I did what we are taught never
to do - I judged a book by it's cover! The hardcover is wrapped by
three layers of paper to comprise the layout of the design. A very
cool innovative style that was entirely relevant to the book's
subject matter.
Michael Chabon is a fantastic writer, but he doesn't need me to
tell him that - he's already been declared as one of the best
American writers by several notable publications. Wonder Boys is
one of my favourite books; as is, The Amazing Adventures of
Kavalier & Clay.
In Maps and Legends, Chabon deconstructs his own work and attempts
to demystify the notion that genres need to be held to a
confinement of style. I highly enjoyed all of the essays and feel
I've become a bigger fan of his work as a consequence.
