Eve of Destruction: Marked, Book 2

by S.J. Day

Tom Doherty Associates | June 2, 2009 | Mass Market Paperbound

Class is in, but Evangeline Hollis is struggling to get through the requisite training to be a full-fledged Mark. When her class goes on a field trip to an abandoned military base, passing the course isn't just a matter of pride…it's a matter of life and death. There's a demon hidden among them, killing off Eve's classmates one by one.

As the body count mounts, a ragtag team of cable TV ghost hunters unwittingly stumbles into the carnage. Now keeping the Mark system secret competes with the need to keep the "paranormal researchers" alive. With Cain on assignment and Abel on an investigation, Eve must fly solo on her hunt to stop a killer before he strikes again.

Eve of Destruction picks up where the cliffhanger from the first book left off, with Eve recovering from her encounter with a Dragon Infernal. Now it's time for training. You would think that after the first book where she was Marked and sent on a mission with no training whatsoever, that she would be happy to be finally getting some. But she isn't. Because of her relationship with Cain and Abel, and the circumstances of her Marking, the reception she gets from the rest of her class is less than friendly. Now she is out on a week long training session at an abandoned military base and teamwork is not exactly on everyone's agenda. When her fellow students start turning up dead, it becomes a matter of life or death to get to find out who is responsible.

This is a good follow-up to the first book. The story has a few twists and it is interesting to read how things get tied together. I like Eve. She is a strong character. She accepts her Marking, but reluctantly. She certainly never planned to be a demon hunter Marked by God and she would much rather be home working on her interior design career. But, since she can't she is willing to try and make the most of things. And things are rather complicated. She loves Alec (Cain), but she has feelings for Reed (Abel) too. The messy triangle of emotions as well as the novel idea of heaven's bureaucracy involved in the fight against evil helps make for an interesting story.
