Marked: A House Of Night Novel

by P. C. Cast, Kristin Cast

St. Martin's Press | May 1, 2007 | Trade Paperback

The House of Night series is set in a world very much like our own, except in 16-year-old Zoey Redbird''s world, vampyres have always existed.  In this first book in the series, Zoey enters the House of Night, a school where, after having undergone the Change, she will train to become an adult vampire--that is, if she makes it through the Change.  Not all of those who are chosen do.  It''s tough to begin a new life, away from her parents and friends, and on top of that, Zoey finds she is no average fledgling.  She has been Marked as special by the vampyre Goddess, Nyx.  But she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers.  When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school''s most elite club, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny--with a little help from her new vampyre friends.

    Could Be Better

I really wanted to enjoy reading this book but I found it hard. It was definitely a page turner, but I always caught myself thinking, "When will the clichéness end?"
I found the dialogue and writing style was written ammateurish and most of the book was predictable. The main character seemed so perfect and clichéd as well; a not-so-good life at home, most popular boy loves her even though she's not popular. Then at the House of Night it's basically the same thing: The most hottest boy in school ditches the most hottest girl in school just to take interest and automatically fall in love with the new, different fledgling. I found that part so irritating.
Oh, not to mention her perfect friends who will do anything for her (helping her save the day, didn't see that one coming) and talk like over-excited teenagers.

I just find everything so unbelievably unrealistic for a fictional although it wasn't that bad. I think the next novels will be as predictable and preppy but it's still not that bad of a read.

    Pretty Good

I am one of those people who enjoy books like twilight to ally carter books so I could say I read anything. But with this book I didn't get hooked until I was almost done the book and on almost on every page I saw the f *** word or the b**** word so those are the only flaws to the book. But other then that it was pretty good.

    Not for Adults

Having enjoyed the Harry Potter and Twilight series as an adult I had this series recommended (online) when looking for 'teen books also enjoyed by adults". I did not enjoy the first book. I did find it humorous in the 'this is completely rediculous" sense.

This book is about a very annoying tween/teen who thinks that life is just 'totally, like unfair' until she is whisked away to a dream world with no parents or rules where the hotest boy in school leaves the hot, but not nice, popular girl for the main character. This is not a completely accurate plot line but you get the point.

My biggest issue with this book was that the main character had no faults (ate well, was pretty, said no to drugs...the list goes on) which on some level I can support as a positive role model for young girls but the faultlessness makes the character unbelieveable and hard to relate to. The only emotion I had towards the main character was the desire to hit her.

I am sure this novel would appeal to a tween/young teenager but I would not recommend it to adults.

From the Jacket

Enter the dark, magical world of The House of Night, a world very much like our own, except here vampyres have always existed.  Sixteen-year-old Zoey Redbird has just been Marked as a fledgling vampyre and joins the House of Night, a school where she will train to become an adult vampire.  That is, if she makes it through the Change--and not all of those who are Marked do.  It sucks to begin a new life, especially away from her friends, and on top of that, Zoey is no average fledgling.  She has been chosen as special by the vampyre Goddess Nyx.  Zoey discovers she has amazing powers, but along with her powers come bloodlust and an unfortunate ability to Imprint her human ex-boyfriend.  To add to her stress, she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers: When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school''s most elite group, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny--with a little help from her new vampyre friends.
