Megiddos Shadow

by Arthur Slade

Harpercollins Canada, Limited | October 5, 2006 | Trade Paperback

Arthur Hercules Slade, whose British cavalry regiment fought in Palestine against the Turks in World War I, was once asked, "What was it like to be in the war?" He answered, "I was everywhere that Jesus was, but I couldn't find him anywhere." Fascinated by the idea of his grandfather charging enemy machine guns with asabre in one hand and his horse's reins in the other, bestselling author Arthur Slade has created a tale of a teenager who finds the true face of war behind the shinyveneer of patriotism, honour and duty.

Megiddo's Shadow is the story ofEdward Bathe, a 16-year-old prairie farm boy who, giddy with the romantic ideals of war and desperate to fight the Huns in France, enlists in 1917. To his disappointment, he is assigned to a horse- training regiment, where the only consolation is Buke, his horse, and Emily, the pretty young nurse he befriends. But when he is sent to fight the Turks in Palestine, Edward learns that what he thought he knew about right and wrong, about heroism and courage, and about God and country, no longer holds true.

Much more than a powerful and shockingly realistic work of historical fiction, Megiddo's Shadow is a poignanttestament to the terrible legacy of war, seen through the eyes of a character with whom readers will instantly connect. An intelligent, provocative and breathtaking read, Megiddo's Shadow affirms Arthur Slade as a literary superstar.

The book Mediggo's Shadow, By Arthur Slade is in depth, and an emotional story of World War I. The main character, Edward Bathe, decides to enlist in the Canadian Army after a tragic death was dealt to his family by the Hungarians. On Edward's ecstatic adventure he makes friends, meets his uncle, and also falls in love with a lady. Arthur Slade does a superb job on the feelings of Edward Bathe and goes into great details for everything so you know exactly what is going on. He goes in to tiny bit details so you even know the scenery.

Art Slade plunges the reader into the shoes of Edward, a 16 year old who has just lost his revered older brother in the Great War. Edward lies about his age and enlists to avenge his brother's death. He quickly finds out that war is not as glamorous as he thought.

The historical detail is bang-on and Edward's day to day experiences are so real that the reader can practically feel the grit of sand in her teeth. There is much in this novel that is very mature but it's handled deftly. I found myself weeping many times as I suffered Edward's losses. A compelling read.

This was an extremely powerful book and even though the events are during the Great War - World War I it seems really timely for 2008 with Canadian troops in Afghanistan. Edward is a sixteen year old farmboy in Saskatchewan when he gets the letter that his older brother has died on the battlefields of France. He sneaks away, lies about his age to join up to avenge Hector and kill some Huns. The book tells his story through training in Moose Jaw, his time in England breaking horses, and finally warfare fought in the deserts of the Jordan valley in the Holy Land fighting against the Turks on horseback. It is extremely well written and feels very topical. Some historical novels are harder for teens but this novel feels current and is extremely easy to read language wise. I would highly highly recommend this book.

I had to read this book for school last year because it was RED MAPLE novel and to tell the truth I was not excited at all but once I got into it I really enjoyed it.

it is a very sad book. Edward Bathe joins the war when he is sixteen, against his father's wishes, after his brother who was serving in the war died. he goes through many dangers and tragedies. although it is good, some parts were disturbing.
